Sooners Split Matches on Day One in Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Oklahoma volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the Georgia Tech Classic, defeating Indiana, 3-2, and falling to Mississippi State, 3-1.

The Sooners (4-4) will face No. 21 Georgia Tech on Sunday at noon CT to close out the weekend.

OKLAHOMA 3, INDIANA 2
Two players earned career-highs as the Sooners took down Indiana in a five-set thriller, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 15-13.

Megan Wilson led all players with 22 kills, her first game of 20-plus kills this season. Wilson also added two service aces, three digs and three blocks.

Kristen Birmingham picked up a career best 11 kills on a .476 clip while also getting in on five blocks. Paige Anderson chipped in 11 kills of her own on a .368 clip and assisted on six blocks.

Peyton Dunn notched 45 kills, her third performance of 40-plus kills this season, while chipping in six kills, eight digs and two blocks.

Defensively, the Sooners notched 12.0 blocks to Indiana's 9.0. Three Sooners notched double-digit kills as Olivia LittleJimĀ chipped in 16, Callie Kemohah tallied 13 and Sam Anthony added 11.

Indiana took set one, 25-22. The Sooners fell behind early in the set as Indiana jumped out to a 6-2 lead. OU fought to make it a one-point game as an ace from LittleJim made it 9-8 in favor of the Hoosiers. Indiana went on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 16-10. A 3-0 run, capped off by an ace from Wilson pulled OU within three, but the Sooners couldn't overtake the hot start by the Hoosiers. OU fought off set point three times before a kill from Indiana's Rammelsburg clinched the set.

The second set started with the two teams seeing 15 ties and eight lead changes as they were locked in a 15-15 tie. A 4-1 run and a kill from Dunn forced Indiana to call timeout as the Sooners pulled ahead 19-16. Wilson's tenth kill of the game made it a 21-18 Sooner lead and OU never looked back as they secured a 25-22 victory.

The third set saw Indiana use an early 4-1 run to take a 10-6 lead and force a Sooner timeout. Out of the break, OU used a 3-0 run and kills from Anderson and Curtis to pull within one. Indiana utilized a 7-1 run to extend their lead and ultimately take the set 25-15.

Similar to the second set, the fourth set saw multiple ties and lead changes as the teams traded points up to 10-10. A 3-0 scoring run for Indiana gave the Hoosiers their largest lead of the set as OU called timeout. The Sooners fought back from the deficit to tie the match at 15-all as Birmingham notched her 10th kill of the match. OU took control of the back-half of the match, using a 10-3 run to close out the set and force a decisive fifth. Ā Ā 

In the final set, the Sooners jumped out to a 6-3 lead but Indiana responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead at 7-6. The teams once again found themselves trading points up to a 12-12 tie with the Sooners using a 3-1 run to close out the set and take the match.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 3, OU 1
The Sooners saw their four-match winning streak come to an end Friday evening as they fell to Mississippi 25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 25-14.

Anderson led the offensive attack with 14 kills on a .478 clip. Wilson notched 10 kills to go with three digs and two blocks. Savannah Davison and Carrington each chipped in seven kills of their own.

Dunn notched her second 40-assist game of the weekend with 40. Kemohah tallied a career-high 29 digs.

State used an early run to take a 7-3 lead and force a Sooner timeout. Back-to-back kills from Wilson and Birmingham pulled the Sooners within two at 14-12. The Bulldogs controlled the end of the set, using an 11-6 run to take set one, 25-18.

The Bulldogs took the second set, 25-16. OU kept it close early as Dunn earned a service ace to make it 5-4. State held the Sooners to just .033 hitting in the second set as they took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Sooners responded big in the third set, holding off Mississippi State with a 27-25 victory. The set saw 13 ties and five lead changes as the Sooners avoided the sweep.

State had the early advantage at 11-9 but the Sooners used a kill from Davison to take a 15-13 lead. With State at match point, LittleJim came up big with a kill and Anderson and Birmingham teamed up for a block to give OU a 25-24 lead. Birmingham sealed the deal with an ace to give OU the set.

State would take the match with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set. The Sooners fell behind early, 9-3, and couldn't get the momentum to overtake the Bulldogs.
