NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head volleyball coach
Lindsey Gray-Walton announced Friday the hiring of Travis Magorien as assistant coach.
Magorien comes to Oklahoma after spending the last three seasons with the James Madison volleyball program.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Travis, Brooke & Brady to the Oklahoma Volleyball program," Gray-Walton said. "The loyalty, trust and offensive IQ in the setting position is what I believed was needed for the program to make great strides in our championship vision. These qualities in combination with a high energy and passion for the people around him, are the next level intangibles Travis brings to any program he's a part of. We're lucky to have Travis and the entire Magorien family in the crimson & cream!"
In his three seasons at JMU, the Dukes went 49-18 and 22-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Magorien helped setter Sarah Martin earn All-CAA honors in 2018 and 2019. Under Magorian, Martin tallied 1,999 assists in her final two seasons with the Dukes.
"I am beyond thrilled to be joining the University of Oklahoma," Magorien said. "When Lindsey reached out to me, I knew that this was an unreal opportunity to work with some great people and for a volleyball program that is on the rise in the NCAA. Thank you to Lauren (Steinbrecher) and everyone at JMU for their support, thank you to Lindsey & Kyle for their trust and belief in me and giving me a chance to be here and compete for championships. I also need to thank my wife Brooke for her endless support of my career and being my rock, and to everyone who has helped me in my coaching journey. I cannot wait to get started! Boomer Sooner!"
Prior to James Madison, Magorien spent the 2017 season at the University of Kentucky as a volunteer assistant coach where he served as the primary setter coach and offensive coordinator. He helped guide the Wildcats to their first NCAA regional finals appearance in program history with an overall record of 29-4 and their first SEC Championship since 1988, finishing league play with a 17-1 record.
In 2017, Magorien was the primary setter coach for Madison Lilley who was an AVCA Second Team All-American, the SEC Freshman of the Year and ACVA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year. He guided the Wildcats offense that ranked first in the SEC and third in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.321).
Prior to Kentucky, Magorien spent two years at his alma mater, CSUN, as an assistant coach to the men's volleyball team (2016-17) and a volunteer assistant with the women's team (2015-16). He served as the primary setter coach for the men's team that ranked in the top ten nationally in assists per set and hitting percentage in 2016.
Magorien was a four-year team captain and letterwinner as a setter for the Matadors, where he led the team in sets for three consecutive years. He ranks seventh all-time in assists with 2,911 over 345 sets at CSUN.
While in college, Magorien also spent time coaching the Bones Volleyball Club, where he led them to a Bronze Medal in 2015 at the Boy's Junior Olympics Open Division. He coached and assisted in the development of four setters who would go on to play at the collegiate level.
Magorien is also involved in the USA Volleyball High Performance coaching pipeline, which allows him to coach and get to know potential top recruits in the nation.
A native of Agoura Hills, Calif., Magorien received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from California State University Northridge in 2015 and later obtained his masters of coaching and athletic administration in 2017 from Concordia University-Irvine.
Magorien comes to Norman with wife, Brooke, who also was a volleyball player at CSUN, and their daughter, Brady.
