NORMAN – Three University of Oklahoma baseball players heard their names called Monday, as
Tyler Hardman,
Wyatt Olds and
Jason Ruffcorn were selected on the second day of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft
Hardman was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Yankees, Olds was selected in the seventh round by the Boston Red Sox and Ruffcorn was taken in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. This is the third time in the last four years and the eighth time since 2007 that three Sooners have been selected in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft.
A fourth-year junior first baseman, Hardman was selected 153rd overall by the Yankees. The 2021 first-team All-American put together an incredible season for the Sooners, leading the Big 12 in batting (.397) while totaling 49 RBIs, 49 runs scored, 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 148 total bases, 34 walks and three stolen bases.
The Corona, Calif., product started all of OU's 55 games this season and registered at least one hit in 47 games, multiple hits in 29 contests and multiple RBIs 15 times. This season, Hardman became the 43rd Sooner to record at least 100 hits (206), 100 RBIs (119) and 100 runs scored (121) in his career.
Hardman demolished previous season bests in hits, home runs, doubles, RBIs and runs scored, as well as batting average, OBP and slugging percentage. His 24 career home runs are tied for 18th in Oklahoma history, and his 45 doubles rank 14th at OU. Hardman has played in 177 career games and made 166 starts, and has compiled a .311 career batting average, a .392 career OBP and a .497 career slugging percentage. He was previously selected in the 37th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.
A third-year sophomore right-hander, Olds was OU's Friday night starter for the majority of the 2021 season after spending his first two years primarily as a relief pitcher. He registered 101 strikeouts in 75.2 innings across 19 appearances and 11 starts this season. He was only the fifth OU pitcher since 2010 and the first since 2018 to total at least 100 strikeouts in a season.
The McLoud, Okla., product pitched at least 5.0 innings in eight of his appearances, including in two relief outings at Kansas State on April 17 and against Texas in the Big 12 Championship. He notched a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing only one run in 6.0 innings against Houston on March 19. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Olds posted a 4-0 record and 1.89 ERA in five appearances and two starts. He has made 55 career appearances, totaling 167 strikeouts in 122.1 innings while compiling a 4.49 ERA.
A fifth-year senior right-hander, Ruffcorn posted a 4-2 record and earned three saves over 21 appearances this season. He struck out 74 batters over his 54.2 innings and held opponents to a .214 batting average. The Cedar Park, Texas, product pitched at least 4.0 innings over his last five appearances (with starts in the last three games) and notched 39 strikeouts over 30.1 frames during that span. He tossed at least 6.0 frames in four straight outings during the month of May, which were comprised of two relief appearances and two starts. He was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on May 3 after striking out 10 batters over 6.2 relief innings in a win over Oklahoma State.
Ruffcorn ranks third in OU history with his 19 saves, and he compiled a career 3.09 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 99.0 innings. He was untouchable during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when he posted a 1-0 record with five saves and a 0.00 ERA over seven appearances, striking out 12 batters and allowing only one walk and three hits in 8.0 innings. He was previous selected in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. His father, Scott Ruffcorn, pitched for the Phillies in 1997.
A total of 284 players have been drafted into Major League Baseball out of Oklahoma since 1967 and at least one player has been drafted every year since 1970. OU has had at least one player picked in the top 10 rounds in every MLB Draft since 2011 and has had multiple players drafted every year since 2009.
