NORMAN – Oklahoma head men's golf coach
Ryan Hybl announced the addition of 2020 Big Ten Player of the Year Chris Gotterup on Thursday.
Gotterup, a graduate transfer who comes to Oklahoma from Rutgers, was named an All-American by PING and Golfweek as well as the Big Ten Player of the Year after the 2019-20 campaign. He leaves Rutgers after a four-year career in New Jersey, where he set school records in scoring average, par-three, four and five scoring, as well as number of par-or-better rounds.
"Anytime we can add a player with the experience and talent that Chris has, we're going to be excited," Hybl said. "He wants to be around our players, practice at our facilities and play the schedule that can challenge him every week."
The Little Silver, N.J., product amassed a 72.27 average over 108 rounds played for the Scarlet Knights. He recently finished in a tie for sixth at the 2021 Big Ten Championship and then grabbed 19th at the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional. He finished ranked 32nd in the PGA Tour U rankings and will be eligible for the rankings in 2021-22. The Sooners were the only school in the nation to place three inside the top 15 of the PGA's inaugural college rankings in 2021 as
Garett Reband,
Quade Cummins and
Jonathan Brightwell all earned professional status following the NCAA Championship.
"I'm excited to get the opportunity to come to Oklahoma and join one of the top programs in college golf," Gotterup said. "The chance to play for Coach Hybl and Coach Allcorn is an exciting one and I hope I can get the best out of my game while working with them. After my time at Rutgers, I've grown a lot and loved my time there, but I'm now looking forward to taking the next step in my career and that is playing at the University of Oklahoma."
The four-time PING All-Region selection adds a boost to a Hybl team in 2021-22 that will look to replace a combined 535 rounds from players who graduated this spring. Gotterup will join current Sooners and top-100 players,
Logan McAllister and
Patrick Welch, as well as a host of underclassmen that will look to bolster the Sooners' lineup next year as the team seeks to become the first program in college golf history to make six straight appearances in NCAA Match Play.
Gotterup, along with a host of other Sooners, are competing on the amateur summer circuit in 2021. Currently, he and
Logan McAllister share spots inside the top 15 at the Sunnehanna Amateur after two rounds of play.
The redshirt senior will arrive in Norman with one year of eligibility remaining.
