Record-Setting Sunday Sends Sooners to Supers

May 23, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma softball team advanced to its 11th consecutive Super Regional and 14th overall in dominating fashion Sunday afternoon.

The Sooners responded to its largest deficit of the season by putting up 24 runs in the final six innings of Saturday's NCAA Norman Regional final to beat Wichita State, 24-7.

After falling behind 4-0 after the first inning, Oklahoma (48-2, 16-1) rattled off eight runs to take the lead in the second inning before putting up 16 more through the game's final five innings, including a 10-spot in the seventh.

OU's 24 runs set an NCAA Regional single-game record while the Sooners 50 runs in three games set an NCAA regional record.

The Sooners blasted six home runs on the day, hitting four in the seventh inning. The six homers tied an NCAA single-game postseason record.

Wichita State's potent offense started hot in the first inning, putting up four runs on five hits off a pair of untested Sooner pitchers in sophomores Olivia Rains and Alanna Thiede. Freshman Nicole May entered after eight batters and collected the final out via strikeout to leave two stranded.

The next frame, Oklahoma responded with eight runs on on six hits. Redshirt senior Nicole Mendes cut the lead in half on a two-RBI single before freshman Tiare Jennings ripped a two-RBI double to tie the game. Two batters later, sophomore Kinzie Hansen gave the Sooners the lead, bringing in Jennings on a single up the middle.

After senior Jocelyn Alo scored on a wild pitch, senior captain Lynnsie Elam dropped a single into center field to score another OU run. Junior Grace Lyons and senior captain Lynnsie Elam hit brought in three more OU runs on a double and single, respectively, to close the OU scoring and put the Sooners up 8-4 after two.

The OU home run barrage began in the third inning. After an RBI groundout from freshman Jayda Coleman, Lyons hit her first of two home runs in the game on a shot to left field to plate two. The Shockers (41-13-1) got a run back in the bottom frame on a leadoff homer from Lauren Mills.

In the fourth, a combined five runs were put on the scoreboard. Oklahoma got three runs off Jennings' 25th home run of her freshman campaign, bringing her within five of the NCAA Division I single-season freshman home run record.

A two-run shot from WSU's Neleigh Herring pulled the Shockers within seven after four.

Following scoreless fifth and sixth innings that kept the contest out of run-rule reach, Oklahoma scored 10 runs on six hits in the top of the seventh.

It marked the seventh time of 2021 that OU has scored 10-plus runs in an inning. The Sooners hit four homers in the frame, making it the fifth time OU has accomplished the feat on the year.

Nine of the 10 runs came via the long ball. Senior Taylon Snow hit her third round-tripper of the season before Lyons and Elam went yard in consecutive at-bats. It was the 14th time Oklahoma has hit consecutive homers on the year.

Lyons' two home run day made it 17 times an OU player has hit two-plus home runs in a game this season. Lyons joined Mendes (vs. Morgan State) and Elam (Saturday vs. Wichita State) with two-homer games on the weekend.

After a bases-loaded walk to Jennings that plated sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo, sophomore Rylie Boone stepped into the box as a pinch hitter. Boone blasted her first career home run on a grand slam to right center to bring OU's inning total to 10 runs.

May closed the game by putting the Shockers down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Ten Sooners collected at least one hit in the game with eight recording two or more and eight players registered RBIs.

Jennings paced OU with six RBIs for the third time of the season, while Lyons batted in five for the second time of her career. Lyons finished 3-for-6 at the plate with two of her three hits being home runs. Elam went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

May collected her 13th win of the season in the circle, going 6.1 innings and striking out four while surrendering three runs on six hits and a walk.

Oklahoma will host its third consecutive Super Regional next weekend in Norman. The Sooners advance to play the winner of the Seattle regional with the regional final coming down to Michigan and Washington Sunday evening.

The Supers dates will be announced Sunday night or Monday morning, along with TV coverage.

Season ticket holder presale will go live at 10 a.m. CT Monday morning. If tickets remain, a public sale will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. All tickets will be all-session and $75 for the weekend. Single-day tickets will be announced if available.
