WACO, Texas ā Conor McKenna went 3 for 4 with two home runs, as the Oklahoma baseball team blasted four homers and withstood a three-hour and 41-minute rain delay to defeat Baylor and clinch the series with a 6-5 victory Saturday at Baylor Ballpark.
Ā
The Sooners (27-26, 11-13 Big 12) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning on McKenna's first homer and an RBI single by
Kendall Pettis before the game was halted for rain. OU came out swinging after the nearly four-hour delay, homering twice in the third inning.
Tyler Hardman went the other way with an 0-1 pitch over the right center field wall. McKenna followed by hammering a 2-1 pitch over the light tower in left field. Hardman and McKenna have both hit a team-high 12 home runs this season.
Ā
After the Bears (31-18, 11-13 Big 12) cut it to 4-2 with a run in the sixth inning,
Breydon Daniel led off the seventh inning with his second home run of the series and fourth of the season to make it 5-2. Hardman later singled home
Peyton Graham to make it a 6-2 lead.
Ā
Baylor pulled within 6-5 in the eighth inning on a three-run double by Davion Downey, but
Carson Carter got a pop out and a strikeout to end the inning.
Luke Taggart closed it down in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Ā
OU starter
Jake Bennett (4-3) pitched 6.0 innings around the rain delay and seemed stronger after returning from the stoppage. Baylor scored a run in the first inning, but Bennett kept the Bears off the board for the next four frames, notching all five of his strikeouts after the delay. He scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs and no walks. Baylor starter Blake Helton (4-3) took the loss.
The Sooners, which won three of their last four series to close out the regular season, will begin the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
