NORMAN ā Catcher
Justin Mitchell tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Oklahoma baseball team came from behind to defeat No. 7 Texas Tech 9-8 in the series opener Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Ā
Mitchell went 3 for 4, also driving in a run on a perfect squeeze bunt that he beat out for a single. Designated hitter
Jimmy Crooks hit his 10th home run of the season as part of a five-run fourth inning that gave the Sooners (25-23, 9-10 Big 12) a 6-5 lead. The Red Raiders (31-12, 10-9 Big 12) led 4-0 after the first inning and 5-1 after the third.
Ā
Wild pitches produced each of Oklahoma's last three runs in the game. Shortstop
Brandon Zaragoza doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to extend OU's lead to 7-5. Right fielder
Jace Bohrofen singled and moved around to score on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, giving the Sooners an 8-7 lead. TTU tied the game with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and again with a solo homer in the top of the eighth.
Ā
Wyatt Olds (4-5) earned the win with three relief innings. He struck out six batters and retired the last seven he faced.
Luke Taggart struck out the side in the seventh inning after relieving OU starter
Jason Ruffcorn, who notched nine punch outs in 6.0 frames. Oklahoma pitchers totaled 18 strikeouts in the contest.Ā
Ā
"I thought Ruffcorn did a great job of settling in," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "The players persevered really well by coming back and scratching and scratching and getting one, then sustained a rally in the fourth to get five runs. Ruffcorn went as far as we could take him, and Taggart was really good, and
Wyatt Olds was really, really good. Mitchell came up with the big hit on Go Mitch Go night, and him scoring the run ā it was a good win tonight. We'll have to regroup tomorrow and get after it."
Ā
Bohrofen tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zaragoza to put the Sooners on the scoreboard. Texas Tech had taken a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a grand slam by designated hitter Cody Masters, then extended its lead to 5-1 in the third inning on a home run by second baseman Jace Jung.
Ā
Oklahoma sent 10 batters to the plate and produced five runs on six hits to take a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning. Center fielder
Breydon Daniel hit a leadoff single, and Zaragoza, Mitchell and left fielder
Kendall Pettis followed with consecutive one-out singles. Mitchell squeezed home Daniel and Pettis drove in Zaragoza to make the score 5-3. Crooks' two-out three-run blast to right field made it 6-5.
Ā
The game went back-and-forth from there. Zaragoza's run extended the OU lead to 7-5 before Tech first baseman Cole Stilwell tied the game with a home run in the sixth inning. Bohrofen gave Oklahoma the lead again with his run in the seventh, before TTU shortstop Cal Conley tied it 8-all with a solo homer in the eighth inning.
Ā
Olds locked it down after that home run, striking out four straight batters, then closed the top of the 10th inning with a called third strike. Mitchell's triple into the right center field gap in the bottom of the 10th was OU's first hit since his one-out single in the seventh that put Bohrofen in position to score on the wild pitch.
Ā
Pettis was honored before the game as the program's 2021 Mitchell Whitaker Award winner. He was presented the award by John Whitaker, head coach
Skip Johnson and 2020 winner
Tyler Hardman. The award is given to a current player who exemplifies hard work, courage, strength and mental toughness.
Ā
The Sooners and Red Raiders continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
