Quade Cummins lead

All-Americans Pace OU in Opening Round

April 09, 2021 | Men's Golf

BRYAN, Texas – After opening with a bogey on the first hole, Oklahoma redshirt senior Quade Cummins dialed up four birdies and 13 pars to secure a 3-under 69 and a share of fourth place after 18 holes at the Aggie Invitational on Friday. His round, paired withĀ Garett Reband'sĀ 71 (-1), kept No. 1 Oklahoma (+2, T2) in contention and just seven shots off the lead with 36 holes outstanding at the par-72 7,227-yard Traditions Golf Club.

"Quade and Garett did a nice job for us today getting it under par," head coachĀ Ryan HyblĀ said. "We didn't make very many putts today, but our guys are figuring the golf course out, and a north wind will really change it up tomorrow, so we'll have to be ready."

Battling harsh conditions, All-Americans Cummins and Reband combined for nine birdies while the rest of the OU lineup sunk three. The redshirt seniors have collected 33 top-10 finishes over their illustrious careers in the Crimson and Cream, as the two have powered the top-ranked Sooners to a top-five team finish in 23 of their last 24 tournaments. As a team, Oklahoma led the field with 62 pars, and its five birdies were good for fifth-most in the field.

Cummins (-3, 4th) produced the ninth round of par-or-better in his last 10 rounds, carding a 69 (-3) to lead the Sooners on day one. He trails leader Pierceson Coody (Texas) by three strokes heading into Saturday's second round. The Weatherford, Okla., product paced the Sooners in par-three and par-four scoring to set himself up for another strong tournament.

Reband (-1, T8) continued his hot streak, firing a 71 and his 10th round under-par this spring. The Big 12 Golfer of the Month in March is in line to notch his 17th-straight top-15 finish as he sits in a tie for eighth entering Saturday. His five birdies led the Sooners and were tied for the fifth-most on the tournament's opening day.

Patrick WelchĀ made his return to the OU lineup with a 2-over 74 to give him a share of 21st following his opening round. The Aliso Viejo, Calif., product sunk 15 pars to steady his play before tallying a birdie on the 15th green to move him into the top 25.

Jonathan BrightwellĀ andĀ Logan McAllisterĀ share 42nd following Friday's round as they both carded 4-over 76s on Friday. For Brightwell, it's just his third round over-par of the spring season and McAllister sunk 15 pars, but his first birdie-free round of the spring season kept him in 42nd.

FreshmanĀ Ben LorenzĀ played as an individual and fired a 3-over 75 to sit in 35th after the first round.Ā

The Sooners will look to close the seven-shot gap that No. 5 Texas holds on Saturday morning when they tee offĀ with the Longhorns and host team No. 12 Texas A&M.Ā
