Tyler Hardman homered,
Jimmy Crooks and
Brett Squires each went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and
Jason Ruffcorn pitched 3.2 relief innings to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 14-4 victory over Georgia Southern in eight innings Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Ā
Ruffcorn (3-1) retired all 11 batters he faced in relief of starter
Braden Carmichael to earn the win. Hardman's ninth homer of the season gave OU the lead in the fourth inning, and the Sooners (20-19) scored 13 unanswered runs to end the game.
Ā
Crooks and Squires each doubled twice, and
Brandon Zaragoza ended the game with a two-run double. Oklahoma notched 18 hits, six of which went for extra bases, and tallied nine of those hits with two outs.
Ā
"I thought Braden battled and battled, and Ruffcorn came in and nailed it down," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "Then we started separating the game and separated balls and strikes. We won that game in several different ways ā baserunning, handling the bat, power, taking our walks. I was really excited to see that. We played really good defense. Ruffcorn was really good in the last part of the game."
Ā
Crooks doubled with two outs in the first inning and scored on an error to make it 2-1 after Georgia Southern plated two runs in the top half.
Ā
With OU trailing 4-1 in the third, Squires doubled home
Tanner Tredaway and scored on a single by
Jace Bohrofen to make it 4-3. In the fourth inning after
Peyton Graham was ruled safe on an infield single after official review, Hardman launched a two-run homer to the right of the batter's eye in center field. His ninth home run of the season put Oklahoma in front 5-4.
Ā
Ruffcorn entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning and ended the threat with a strikeout and a groundout. He then retired the side in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to hold off the Eagles (24-15).
Ā
The Sooners extended their lead to 6-4 in the fifth when
Connor Beichler scored on a balk. He hit a two-out single, stole second and went to third when the throw to second skirted into center field.
Ā
In the seventh, Squires doubled home Crooks and
Breydon Daniel executed a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Tredaway. Squires scored on the play when the throw to first sailed down the right field line. OU led 9-4 at that point.
Ā
OU continued to pour on runs in the seventh, extending its lead to 11-4 on a two-run double by Squires. In the eighth,
Conor McKenna knocked an RBI single through the infield and Zaragoza ended the game by launching a two-run double into deep left center field.
Ā
Georgia Southern starter Jordan Jackson (2-6) took the loss. Steven Curry went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
