OU Run Rules Texas in Game One

April 16, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team came out swinging for its first top-10 matchup of the season. The Sooners blasted three home runs to beat No. 7/8 Texas 11-1 by run rule in game one of the series.

Redshirt senior pitcher Giselle Juarez opened the game with three consecutive strikeouts en route to a three hit, one run, four strikeout complete game.

The Sooners hit back-to-back home runs in their first two at-bats of the game. Freshman Tiare Jennings hit her 18th home run of her freshman season in the leadoff spot before senior Jocelyn Alo launched her nation-best 23rd round-tripper of 2021. OU plated three more runs in the first inning courtesy of a triple by frosh Jayda Coleman and singles from seniors Lynnsie Elam and Nicole Mendes.

Texas scored its only run of the game on a solo shot from Brianna Cantu in the third inning before OU quickly got two runs back in the bottom of the inning off a RBI groundout from Alo and a UT error that scored sophomore Kinzie Hansen.

OU plated their eighth run in the fourth inning off an error by Texas' first baseman that allowed senior Taylon Snow to advance home.

In the fifth, following singles from Snow and junior Grace Lyons, sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo ripped a pinch-hit, three-run, walk-off homer. The shot to right center was the Mustang, Okla., native's sixth career home run, all coming in her sophomore campaign.

The Sooners outhit the Longhorns by a count of 12-3 on the night and committed zero errors to UT's three. Texas pitchers hit six OU batters on the night.

Lyons paced OU in the box with a 3-for-4, two run scored performance while Mendes went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Oklahoma moves to 31-0 on the season and 7-0 in Big 12 play. Texas (31-4, 6-1) drops just its fourth game of the season, first in conference competition and first in its last 15 games.

The teams meet for game two of the three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be shown to a national audience on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins and Michele Smith on the call. The game can be heard via The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
