Sooners Take Series Over Texas

April 17, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (32-0, 8-0) took the series over No. 7/8 Texas with its 24th run-rule victory of the season, beating the Longhorns (31-5, 6-2) by a final of 10-2 in five innings.

OU collects its 57th consecutive conference series win with the series-clinching victory Saturday, also bringing its consecutive regular season Big 12 win streak to 51 games.

The best hitting team in college softball picked up where they left off Friday night, out slugging Texas by a count of 13 to three to go with two home runs.

Freshman Tiare Jennings hit her 19th home run of the season while senior captain Lynnsie Elam launched her fifth homer of 2021. Seven Sooners recorded at least one hit in the game with Elam, junior Grace Lyons and senior Taylon Snow all going perfect at the plate.

The Longhorns loaded the bases in the first inning off one hit and a pair of walks before redshirt senior Shannon Saile stranded the trio with a flyout. Saile collected the win in the circle with a three hit, two run, complete-game performance. She struck out seven and walked six.

Oklahoma put four runs on the board in the first courtesy of RBI doubles from sophomore Kinzie Hansen and freshman Jayda Coleman and a pair of RBI singles from Elam and Snow.

Texas got one run back in the third inning off a solo shot from Janae Jefferson that bounced off the top of the left field wall and came back into play but was signaled as a home run by the third base umpire.

Elam quickly got two runs back for the Sooners, ripping the 19th home run of her career in the bottom of the third on a blast to left field.

Jennings hit her second home run in as many games against the Longhorns in the fourth inning on a solo shot to left center before Texas responded with a one-run round-tripper of their own in the fifth inning.

The Sooners brought the game into mercy-rule territory in the bottom of the fifth starting with Snow's second RBI single of the contest and a sac-fly RBI from Jennings. Lyons walked it off with a RBI single that dropped into center field to make the final 10-2 in five innings.

Elam batted in a trio of runs to lead the Sooners on the day while Jennings went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Coleman extended her season-high hit streak to 18 consecutive games. Lyons finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored to go with a pair of walks.

With the win, OU improves its NCAA-best win streak to 38 games and program record start to the season to 32-0.

Oklahoma won its 20th consecutive game over Texas and eighth straight Big 12 series over the Longhorns with the game two win.

The teams meet for the series finale at 4 p.m. CT Sunday. The game can be seen on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins and Michele Smith commentating. The action can be heard on The Franchise (107.7 FM) in Oklahoma and the TuneIn app nationwide with OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank on the call.
