April 10, 2021 | Softball
RUSTON, La. — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (30-0, 6-0) took two non-conference games in run-rule fashion Saturday over Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech at the Lady Techsters Softball Complex in Ruston, La.
OU topped Mississippi State 9-0 in five innings before run-ruling Louisiana Tech 10-0 in the second game of the day. Oklahoma outhit its two opponents by a combined 17-2, with the Sooner pitching staff throwing its 15th and 16th shutout games of the season. Additionally, the Sooners stacked run-rule wins No. 21 and 22 on the year and improved their NCAA-best win streak to 37 games.
Head coach Patty Gasso faced off against pupil and former OU All-American Samantha Ricketts in OU's first game of the day, as Ricketts is in her second year at the helm of the Mississippi State program.
The Sooners and Bulldogs went scoreless through two innings before OU opened things up in a big way in the third inning. OU put eight runs across courtesy of four hits and two MSU errors.
Following a single from senior Jocelyn Alo, an error that let sophomore Kinzie Hansen reach base and a fielder's choice that put junior Grace Lyons on, senior Lynnsie Elam laced an RBI single to plate the first run of the game. Following Elam's 17th RBI of the season, three consecutive MSU wild pitches let three more OU runs across.
Junior Grace Green continued the OU scoring with a sac-fly RBI to bring in freshman Jayda Coleman before fellow frosh Tiare Jennings launched her 17th home run of her first-year campaign on a three-run shot to left center.
After a single from redshirt senior Nicole Mendes in the bottom of the fourth, Lyons brought her in with an RBI double to right center to make the final tally 9-0, OU.
Jennings and Coleman continued to impress in their freshman seasons, with Jennings bringing in three runs on her home run and Coleman going 2-for-3 with one stolen base. Seven Sooners registered at least one hit versus the Bulldogs.
Redshirt senior pitchers Giselle Juarez and Shannon Saile combined for the one-hit shutout. Juarez struck out four in three innings, walked a pair and allowed one hit to collect her team-best 11th win of the year while Saile came in for the final two innings and punched out a pair.
OU turned around to face the Lady Techsters in the afternoon cap, beating La Tech behind an exceptional performance from freshman right-handed pitcher Nicole May in the circle.
May struck out seven in just 3.1 innings of work to go with no walks or runs and just one hit allowed, collecting her 10th win of her freshman season.
The second game also went scoreless through two innings before OU opened the scoring up in the third. After a walk to Rylie Boone and stolen bag by the sophomore, Jennings hit an infield single to advance Boone to third before a throwing error let Boone across home for the first run of the game.
Hansen ripped her first RBI double of the game two at-bats later to plate Jennings before Green registered her second sac-fly RBI of the day to bring Hansen across.
OU's final two runs of the third came via passed ball and throwing error, letting Lyons and Coleman across for OU's fifth and sixth runs of the inning on three hits and a pair of errors.
Senior Jana Johns hit her sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning on a three-run shot down the right field line. Hansen capped the day's scoring with her second RBI double in the inning to plate senior Taylon Snow.
Sophomores Olivia Rains (1.0) and Brooke Vestal (0.2) combined to close for the Sooners in the circle, with Rains retiring the three batters she faced and Vestal striking out the pair that she faced.
Eight Sooners recorded a hit in game two with Hansen pacing the team on a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs. Johns brought in three on her home run while Coleman and Mendes each registered two runs scored.
Four Sooners stole a base against the Lady Techsters with Coleman stealing two to bring her total to 15 on the season. Additionally, Coleman continues her tear in the batter's box, pushing her consecutive game hit streak to 16 games.
Oklahoma returns to Big 12 conference play April 16-18 in Norman as No. 7/8 Texas comes to town. Game one (6 p.m. CT) will be available to watch via SoonerSports.tv while games two (3 p.m.) and three (4 p.m.) will be shown on ESPN2.
