Midweek Match with UTSA Up Next

March 09, 2021 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – The No. 28 Oklahoma men's tennis team is home Wednesday for the first of three matches this week. The Sooners will host UTSA at 3 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

  •  ITA No. 28 OU (6-6) is home for a midweek contest with UTSA on Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT. The Sooners and Roadrunners have met just twice in history with OU winning both contests. The last match between the teams was on March 10, 2006 in Norman, where the Sooners swept UTSA 7-0.

  •  The Sooners will look to bounce back after dropping two tight matches over the weekend as OU fell 4-3 to both No. 21 Arizona State and No. 6 Texas at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

  • OU has won the doubles point in each of its six of its last seven matches, dropping it only to Arizona State over that stretch. The Sooners took the doubles point off Texas for the first time since April 27, 2017 with a 7-5 win from Jake Van Emburgh and Matt Rodriguez on court three and Alex Martinez and Nathan Han providing the clincher in a 6-4 victory at the top spot. The Sooners are 5-2 this season when they've won the doubles point.

  •  Senior Jake Van Emburgh has notched ranked wins in two of his last three singles matches. Van Emburgh defeated Tulsa's No. 67 Kody Pearson handily, 6-2, 6-3, on Feb. 21, then held on for a three-set victory over No. 120 Eliot Spizzirri of Texas 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-1, on March 7. Currently unranked, Van Emburgh has been rated as high as No. 47 nationally in his OU career.

  • Wednesday's match will be OU's last tuneup before Big 12 play opens on Friday with Oklahoma State at home, followed by a Sunday meeting with Texas Tech in Dallas. As of March 9, all six Big 12 men's tennis teams are ranked in the ITA top 35: No. 2 Baylor, No. 5 TCU, No. 6 Texas, No. 26 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Oklahoma and No. 35 Texas Tech.
