FRISCO, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team fell to Dallas Baptist 9-3 Sunday evening in the finale of the Frisco College Baseball Classic at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
The Sooners (5-6) scored all three runs in the seventh inning and kept the Patriots (8-3) off the scoreboard after the third inning. OU finished with five hits in the game and drew four walks, all of which came in the seventh inning.
"I thought all weekend we really hadn't been ourselves. We hadn't put a complete game together, pitching and hitting," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "We swung the bats very well this weekend, which is a great thing. We didn't swing the bats very well last weekend but pitched better. I think those things are going to turn. It's early in the year, and playing a tough schedule like we have, it's only going to benefit us. We just have to keep staying in the process and understand that it's about confidence and trying to keep our confidence as we go through the remainder of the non-conference season."
Shortstop
Brandon Zaragoza singled and drove in a run on a base-loaded walk, and designated hitter
Logan Kohler, center fielder
Tanner Tredaway and right fielder
Brett Squires all singled. Third baseman
Peyton Graham walked in a run, and left fielder
Kendall Pettis and pinch hitters
Diego Muniz and
Breydon Daniel all scored runs.
Muniz led off the seventh inning with a base hit, Daniel reached on an error and Pettis drew the first of three consecutive walks, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 9-3.
DBU scored all of its runs in the first three innings, plating three runs in the first, five in the second and one more in the third. Left fielder Jace Grady finished with three hits and two RBIs and second baseman Jackson Glenn had two hits and two RBIs. Grady, Glenn and right fielder River Town each scored two runs for the Patriots.
Oklahoma starter
Jake Bennett (1-1) pitched a scoreless fourth inning and gave way to
Luke Taggart to begin the fifth. Taggart struck out five batters over his two frames.
Javier Ramos and
Jason Ruffcorn were each perfect in an inning of work. DBU starter Ray Gaither (1-1) allowed three hits and struck out six batters in 6.0 innings.
The Sooners return home for four games this week at L. Dale Mitchell Park. OU plays UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and hosts Arkansas State in a three-game series Friday through Sunday, March 12-14.
