Sooners Drops Frisco Classic Opener to Arizona

March 04, 2021 | Baseball

FRISCO, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team dropped the opener of the Frisco College Baseball Classic to Arizona 20-13 Thursday afternoon at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.

The Sooners (4-4) stormed out to a 9-3 lead after three innings, scoring two runs in the first and six runs in the third. OU added two runs in the fifth inning that tied the game at 11-11, then plated one run each in the eighth and ninth innings. The Wildcats (7-2) scored three runs in the second, four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, two runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.

Oklahoma tallied season highs of 13 runs and 15 hits in the game, and every batter in the lineup had at least one hit and scored at least one run. The 30 combined runs Thursday were the most in an OU game since 2011 when the Sooners defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 27-7.

"We lost some momentum in the fourth inning when we didn't get outs on time, and against a good club like that, you have to get your outs on time," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "We fought back and tied the game up at 11-11, but really didn't take the momentum like we had it early in the game."

Designated hitter Jimmy Crooks went 3 for 4 with two walks, two RBIs and four runs scored. He hit a two-run double as part of OU's six-run third inning. First baseman Tyler Hardman went 2 for 3 with three walks and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth inning. Second baseman Conor McKenna (2 for 6, two RBIs) hit his third home run of the season to lead off the third.

Center fielder Tanner Tredaway went 2 for 4 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, catcher Justin Mitchell had two hits and scored a run, and third baseman Peyton Graham drove in two runs. Left fielder Diego Muniz, right fielder Brett Squires and shortstop Brandon Zaragoza each drove in a run.

OU batters totaled 11 walks and six strikeouts while Arizona batters finished with eight walks and four strikeouts. The strikeout totals were well below each pitching staff's season average. OU entered the day averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings while Arizona entered the game averaging 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

The teams traded blows through the first half of the contest. Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a base hit by McKenna and a sacrifice fly by Muniz. Graham singled in the second inning to tie the game 3-all after Arizona scored three runs in the top half on a two-run home run by third baseman Jacob Berry and a sacrifice fly.

The Sooners poured on six runs in the third inning on McKenna's homer, an RBI single by Tredaway, a fielder's choice groundout, Crooks' two-run double and a base hit by Hardman. After the Wildcats came back to take an 11-9 lead in the fifth inning, Hardman drove a two-run double to the right center gap to tie it again, 11-11. Zaragoza provided an RBI single in the eighth inning and Squires drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.

Luke Taggart (0-1) took the loss for OU while Vince Vanelle (1-0) earned the win for Arizona. UA left fielder Mac Bingham hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Right fielder Blake Paugh went 4 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored and second baseman Kobe Kato went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and five runs for the Wildcats.

The Sooners and Wildcats will meet again at noon Friday. The Frisco Classic continues through Sunday.
