AUSTIN, Texas –
Tyler Hardman homered twice, but the Oklahoma baseball team could not overcome four home runs by No. 9 Texas in an 11-6 defeat Saturday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Hardman hit his third and fourth home runs of the season to put the Sooners (12-10, 0-2 Big 12) ahead 4-2 after four-and-a-half innings. He went the other way with a two-run homer to right field in the top of the first inning, as OU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first for the second night in a row. He then launched a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning.
After allowing only single runs in the second, third and fifth innings, Oklahoma ran into trouble in the sixth when two home runs gave the Longhorns (17-6, 4-1 Big 12) a 6-4 lead. Texas added a run in the seventh and four in the eighth to make it 11-4.
In the ninth,
Jace Bohrofen and
Brandon Zaragoza led off with consecutive singles and
Peyton Graham lined an RBI base hit into center field. Zaragoza came home on a wild pitch to reach the final margin.
Jake Bennett went 5.0 innings in his start for OU, striking out four batters and walking none.
Jaret Godman (0-1) took the loss while Texas starter Tristan Stevens (3-1) went 6.0 innings in the win.
The Sooners and Longhorns close out the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Oklahoma started quickly on offense and the game began much as it did on Friday night.
Jimmy Crooks drew a one-out walk, leading to Hardman's first two-run home run. The Sooners put runners on base – a Crooks single in the third and a Zaragoza walk in the fourth – but could not muster runs.
Kendall Pettis led off the fifth inning with a single, and with two outs, Hardman hit his second home run of the night to put OU back on top 4-2.
Texas scored single runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Mitchell Daly, a groundout in the third and a single by Trey Faltine in the fifth. Cam Williams and Zach Zubia homered in the sixth inning, Eric Kennedy homered in the seventh and Williams hit another homer in the eighth inning.
