BERKELEY — In its final regular season meet, No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team beat No. 11 Cal by a score of 404.700-390.600 Saturday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
The Sooners won all six events as a team and put up the top scores on five events, improving to 6-0-1 on the season.
OU started on pommel horse and posted a team total of 62.850. Freshman
Zach Nunez won the event with a 13.650. He was followed by sophomore
Alan Camillus with a 12.750.
In the second rotation, the Sooners put up two career-high scores and one season best on floor exercise. Senior
Matt Wenske and redshirt senior
Mason Menser set their respective career bests, 14.500 and 13.600. Sophomore
Jack Freeman put up a 14.200, good for a season-high score. Senior
Gage Dyer's 14.550 also contributed to the team's overall score of 70.700.
The team tallied a 70.850 on vault, good for the highest score of the day on any event. Menser, Seyler and Wenske all put up a 14.250. Redshirt sophomore
Josh Corona was close behind with a 14.150.
In the fourth rotation, the Sooners produced a 68.350 on still rings and set multiple career and season-best scores. Wenske led the team with a 14.050, good for a season-best score. Camillus and Seyler set their career-best scores at 13.750 and 13.700, respectively.
OU moved to high bar for the fifth rotation of the day. Freeman secured the event title and tied his career-best score with a 13.800. Nunez's 13.000 also helped bring the Sooners to a 63.300 on the event.
The Sooners closed the meet with a 68.650 on parallel bars and were paced by redshirt sophomore
Cesar Gracia. The redshirt sophomore put up a career-best of 14.400, 0.450 better than his previous best score. Wenske tied his season-best score with a 14.150 and Camillus and Goodell both put up a 13.600.
The Sooners will take a week off from competition before squaring off against No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 Cal, and No. 14 Air Force at the MPSF Conference Championships, Saturday, April 3 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
