NORMAN – Oklahoma's Anastasia Webb has been named one of six finalists for the prestigious AAI Award, recognizing the most outstanding senior female gymnast in the country. The honor is voted on by NCAA women's gymnastics head coaches and sponsored by American Athletic, Inc. (AAI).
The AAI Award is considered one of the highest honors given in the sport of women's gymnastics. Webb is Oklahoma's 10th consecutive finalist for the award, joining Megan Ferguson (2012), Brie Olson (2013), Taylor Spears (2014), Erica Brewer (2015), Haley Scaman (2016), Chayse Capps (2017), AJ Jackson (2018), Brenna Dowell (2019), and Maggie Nichols (2020).
Webb is joined by five additional finalists including Alyssa Baumann (Florida), Lynnzee Brown (Denver), Nia Dennis (UCLA), Kyana George (California) and Lexy Ramler (Minnesota).
"Anastasia's athleticism is only surpassed by her heart," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "She has used her passion as fuel and throughout COVID has shown a discipline and ambition to finish her career on her own terms. Her leadership and guidance are sought after by her teammates. Anastasia's strengths span all four events exhibiting no physical weakness. She strives daily to be better in all walks of her life and pushes her own limits. Her versatility has been displayed by competing two different 10.0 valued vaults in her career (Yurchenko 1&1/2 and Yurchenko ½ on front pike). On bars she has increased her difficulty with her unique and very difficult double front half out. On beam and floor she has a style all her own. I respect and admire her as a person and am proud to celebrate her contribution to the Sooner tradition."
A member of OU's team that claimed the 2019 NCAA Championship, Webb has been a vital part of OU's success. During her OU career, the Sooners have secured an NCAA top-two finish each year, earned two consecutive NCAA Regional titles and two straight Big 12 Conference Championships.
Webb is 100 percent in participation, having competed in every single meet during her career. She boasts a hit percentage of 95.0, nailing 156 of 164 career routines. Webb has competed in the all-around in 47 of her 54 career meets and has competed at least three events in 53 of 54. She has never missed an opportunity to compete on bars or beam, competing those two events in all 54 career meets.
As a senior, she is setting her career highs left and right. This season, she has added a pair of perfect 10s on vault and a second perfect 10 on beam after earning one as a freshman. She added a career-high of 9.975 on bars this season, inching closer to perfection on the event. After setting her career high in the all-around with a 39.725 early in February, she blew that score out of the water with a 39.850 in early March – the second highest score in the NCAA this season. Currently, Webb ranks second on vault, third on beam, fourth in the all-around, sixth on floor and 14th on bars. Webb has helped her team to a No. 1 ranking this season.
In 2018, Webb became just the third freshman in program history to earn a perfect score on any event with a 10.0 on beam. She was named the 2018 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after her breakout season that saw her named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week seven times.
Webb is a three-time NCAA All-American and eight-time WCGA All-American. She was the 2018 Big 12 Floor Champion and is a five-time All-Big 12 selection. The Morton Grove, Ill., native owns 60 individual titles including 16 on beam, 15 each on floor and in the all-around, nine on vault and five on bars.
While excelling on the competition floor, Webb has also excelled in the classroom and is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and a two-time WCGA Academic All-American. She will graduate in May 2021 with a degree in health, medicine & society.
Webb and the No. 1 Sooners will compete in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The meet will take place in Morgantown, W.Va., and will air on ESPN2.
