March 12, 2021 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team took two games Friday on the opening day of the Hall of Fame Classic at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
OU opened the day with a 9-1 run-rule victory over Houston in five innings before rallying to top Kansas City, 6-2 in the second game of the day.
The Sooners went to work early against the Cougars, putting up five runs in the first inning. Junior Grace Lyons went yard on the first pitch she saw, launching her ninth home run of the year on a two run shot to left center. Three batters later, senior Taylon Snow hit her first home run of 2021 and just the third of her career on a deep three-run shot to right.
After putting up a five-spot in the first inning, Oklahoma plated a pair of runs in the second inning. Sophomore Kinzie Hansen extended her hitting streak to six games on an RBI single up the middle before freshman Jayda Coleman laced an RBI single down the right field line to plate Lyons.
The Cougars got their first and only hit of the game on a solo shot from Britaney Shaw in the fourth inning before the Sooners put two more across in the bottom frame.
In the fourth, senior Jocelyn Alo launched her first home run of the day on a solo shot to left field prior to a sac-fly RBI from Snow brought in sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo.
Snow led the team with a season-best four RBIs in a 1-for-2, one home run performance. Lyons went 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs and a base on balls while Coleman was also perfect in the box, finishing 2-for-2 with one run batted in.
Redshirt senior Shannon Saile threw three scoreless innings to get the win in the circle, striking out five and allowing no runs or hits to go with five walks. Sophomore lefty Alanna Thiede closed for the Sooners, going two innings and surrounding just one hit, one run and no walks to go with one strikeout.
Oklahoma turned around to play Kansas City in the second game of the day, completing the rally after falling behind two runs through four innings.
The Roos went up 2-0 in the second inning off a two-run home run from Delainey Fenoglio before play was halted in the fourth inning due to rain.
Following the delay, Oklahoma put up five runs in a six-hit fifth inning. The rally began with singles from Donihoo and redshirt senior Nicole Mendes and a two-RBI single from pinch hitter Grace Green.
The next batter, freshman Tiare Jennings, ripped an RBI double to right field to bring another OU run across before Alo blasted a no-doubter to left field, batting in two more OU runs. It marked Alo's 17th home run of the season after hitting No. 16 in game one of the day. Her career home run total is up to 71 and career-best hitting streak is at 34 games.
In the circle, redshirt senior Giselle Juarez collected her team-best seventh win of the season. Juarez went the full seven innings, striking out six and allowing two runs on three hits with two walks. She paces the Sooners with 47 strikeouts in 34.0 innings pitched on the season.
Oklahoma launched three home runs on the day to bring their season total to an exceptional 70 blasts. Additionally, the Sooners are outscoring opponents 246-21 on the year.
Oklahoma will return to the field at Hall of Fame Stadium Sunday for a doubleheader with Liberty after adjusting the schedule due to inclement weather. The Sooners and Flames will play at noon CT and 2:30 p.m. with the first contest live on FOX Sports Oklahoma and the second game shown via livestream on SoonerSports.tv.
