NORMAN – No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team returns to the floor Saturday afternoon at home to compete against No. 4 Stanford at 1 p.m. CT. The match-up is Senior Night for Gage Dyer, Mason Menser, Alexei Vernyi and Matt Wenske.
NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR MEET FIVE
THE MEET
No. 1 Oklahoma plays host for its fifth meet of the 2021 season Saturday, welcoming No. 4 Stanford to McCasland Field House for a top-five matchup. The meet will air on FOX Sports Oklahoma, FOX Sports Southwest and FOX Sports Southeast. The teams last met in Palo Alto, Calif., last season with the Cardinal edging the Sooners in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup, 408.200-420.050.
The Sooners return to action after beating No. 11 William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., on March 6.
SOONERS NO. 1 IN CGA STANDINGS, COACHES POLL
After week eight of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma continues to hold the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings and coaches poll. The No. 1 Sooners toppled William & Mary College last weekend, 403.700-384.900.
The Sooners hold the top team average (413.867) along with the top spots on four of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.450), still rings (67.883), parallel bars (68.450), high bar (67.217) and second on pommel horse (67.750) and vault (72.317).
Individually, Sooners hold three of the top -10 spots in the all-around rankings, led by junior Vitaliy Guimaraes' 81.250, which is good for seventh. Junior Spencer Goodell holds spot nine with a 80.800 and senior Matt Wenske holds tenth in the country after his 79.400 all-around effort.
On floor exercise, Sooners hold two of the top five spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer ranks No. 1 with a 14.850, putting him 0.200 ahead of his closet opponent. Junior Morgan Seyler ranks fourth at 14.450.
OU holds one top-10 spot in the pommel horse standings, led by Guimaraes' 13.767, good for sixth place. Freshman Zach Nunez follows close behind in the number 11 spot with a 13.717.
On still rings, three Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Wenske leads the way with his 13.833 average that ranks seventh overall. In eighth, Guimaraes holds his third top-10 spot in the country on rings with a 13.817 average, and Goodell is right behind him in ninth with a 13.717.
The Sooners have two in the top-10 on vault. Junior Mason Menser is ranked sixth in the nation with a 14.633. Goodell holds the nine spot with a 14.633 vault NQA. Dyer ties for eleventh with a 14.533.
Oklahoma put two gymnasts in the top 10 in the parallel bars ranks following week eight. Wenske (13.933) ranks seventh, while Goodell (13.717) holds ninth.
On the last event, high bar, two Sooners find themselves in the top-10. Guimaraes collects his fourth top-10 spot in the country with a 13.800 average, putting him in the four spot. Sophomore Jack Freeman finds himself tenth with a 13.517.
LAST TIME OUT
In its first competition since Jan. 30, the No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team beat No. 11 William & Mary by a score of 403.700-384.900 Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va.The Sooners won all six events as a team and posted at least two of the top individual scores on each event in improving to 4-0 on the season.
OU started on pommel horse and posted a team total of 63.900. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes won the event with a 13.650. He was followed by freshman Zach Nunez and junior Morgan Seyler, who recorded respective scores of 13.400 and 13.200.
In the second rotation, the Sooners put up multiple season-high scores on floor exercise. Seyler tied his season best with a 14.450 while Goodell and sophomore Jack Freeman set outright season highs with respective scores of 14.250 and 14.150. Additionally, redshirt junior Mason Menser made his career debut on the event and finished with a 13.350. Oklahoma totaled a 69.050 for the rotation.
The team showed its strength on vault with a 70.850, good for the highest score of the day on any event. Menser and Seyler tied their career bests with a 14.650 and 14.550, respectively. Freeman (14.250) made his season debut on the event while freshman Zach Nunez's vault appearance was the first of his career (13.950).
In the fourth rotation, the Sooners produced a 67.000 on still rings and were led by Guimaraes' career high of 14.100. It marked the highest rings score by a Sooner this season (the previous high was 13.900 by Matt Wenske vs. Air Force). Freeman earned a 13.600, also good for a career best.
OU moved to high bar for the fifth rotation of the day. Guimaraes secured another event title and set another career-best score with a 13.850. Goodell's 13.100 also marked a career high and matched the score of senior Alexei Vernyi. The Sooners tallied a 65.350.
The Sooners closed the meet with a 67.550 on parallel bars and were paced by Noah Giordano. The freshman, who was making his OU debut on any event, scored a meet-high 13.750. Guimaraes and Goodell followed with a 13.650 each, and Nunez scored a 13.500 in his first collegiate parallel bars performance.
