Pitching Perfect in Run-Rule Win

February 28, 2021 | Softball

PHOENIX — The Oklahoma softball pitching staff threw a perfect game Sunday to close the weekend for the Sooners in run-rule fashion.

No. 2 OU made quick work of Portland State in five innings, 8-0, to bring its record to 12-0. Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez, redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal and freshman Nicole May combined for Oklahoma's first perfect game since a 2019 NCAA regional contest versus UMBC.

The hitters showed their power yet again, blasting three home runs and scattering 10 hits Sunday morning. Freshman Tiare Jennings began the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double that brought in fellow freshman Jayda Coleman.

Senior Jocelyn Alo launched her fourth home run of the weekend and 10th on the season in the top of the second to plate three more OU runs prior to sophomore Kinzie Hansen hitting her sixth home run of 2021 on a three-run shot to center field.

Redshirt senior Nicole Mendes brought the game into run-rule territory at the top of the fifth on a solo home run to bring the final tally to 8-0, Sooners. Hansen and Mendes paced OU in the box with respective 2-for-2 and 2-for-3 performances with Hansen bringing in three runs and Mendes registering two runs scored.

Juarez got the win in the circle on a perfect day for the pitchers, striking out two in two innings pitched. May entered in the third and quickly retired six consecutive batters, collecting three strikeouts in her two-inning performance. Vestal made her second appearance of the season, closing for OU in the fifth and retiring the final three batters to make it a 15 up, 15 down day for OU's defense.

Oklahoma returns to Norman for opening weekend at Marita Hynes Field, March 5-7. The Sooners will host No. 19/20 Missouri, Louisiana Monroe and Sam Houston State at the annual Courtyard Marriott Tournament.

The action can be seen on FOX Sports Oklahoma and SoonerSports.tv with play-by-play announcer Chris Plank on the call for every game and OU alums Destinee Martinez and Erin Miller sharing the color commentary throughout the weekend.

At this time, attendance at Marita Hynes Field will be limited and on a pass-list only basis.
