Singles Comeback Sparks Win Over SMU

February 27, 2021 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – After dropping the doubles point to start the match, the Oklahoma women's tennis team rallied for a singles sweep to put away SMU Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

"I'm really proud of how well we responded after the doubles point," said OU head coach Audra Cohen. "We got off to a quick lead on each court and that helped us gain the momentum we needed to sweep the singles matches today."

In doubles action, Carmen and Ivana Corley suffered just their second loss as a pair, falling to SMU's Hadley Doyle and Jackie Nylander, 6-4 on court one.

Playing together for the first time this season, Martina Capurro and Camila Romero were defeated by Chandler Carter and Claudia Bartolome, 6-4.

When play was halted, Dana Guzman and Kianah Motosono trailed the Mustangs' Nicole Petchy and Windslow Huth 5-4 on court three.

OU powered back in singles action. Ivana Corley struck first, downing Carter 6-1, 6-4 on court three to put the Sooners on the board and earn her third straight victory.

Freshman Guzman, playing at her highest spot in the lineup, put away Doyle 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Carmen Corley played a perfect second set to close out Nylander 6-4, 6-0 at the top spot.

Motosono clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Petchy on court five. Motosono's win was good for her seventh straight.

The remaining matches played out. After missing the first part of the season due to injury, Romero grabbed her first singles win in a 6-3, 6-3 decision of Huth on court six.

Junior Marcelina Podlinska battled to a win in a 10-point tiebreaker on court four. Podlinska held on to take her first set 7-6 (10) before SMU's Bartolome took set two 6-3 and force a decider. Podlinska held strong through the 10-point breaker, winning 10-7.
