OU Sets Program Record, Remains Undefeated
February 27, 2021 | Softball
PHOENIX — The No. 2 Oklahoma softball team collected two more wins Saturday to bring its record to an undefeated 11-0. The Sooners outscored Saturday's opponents 47-4, run-ruling New Mexico 33-4 and Grand Canyon, 14-0.
Oklahoma set a program record in the first game of the day versus New Mexico with 28 hits on a season-high 33 runs, besting the previous program best of 24 hits set against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2014.
OU sent 16 batters to the box in the game, with 14 registering at least one hit and nine Sooners recording multiple hits. Redshirt senior Nicole Mendes finished 4-for-5 with five runs and an RBI while senior Jocelyn Alo continued her dominant start to the season with a 2-for-2, 4 RBI performance that included her second grand slam of the season.
Following a solo home run from UNM at the top of the first, freshman Tiare Jennings ensured OU didn't trail for long. She drilled her seventh home run of her first-year campaign on a towering three-run shot to center to open the scoring for OU in the bottom of the inning. Oklahoma put up seven runs in the first, second and fourth innings and an astronomical 12 runs on 12 hits in the third.
Senior Jana Johns and junior Grace Green joined Alo in batting in four runs in the contest, with Johns hitting her fourth homer of the season on a three-run shot to bring OU's run tally to 33 at the top of the fifth.
Freshman Nicole May collected her team-leading fourth win of the year in the circle, striking out five and allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks. Sophomores Macy McAdoo and Alanna Thiede also saw time in the circle for OU, with Thiede striking out a pair to close the game.
The Sooners went back to work in game two, besting the host Antelopes by a score of 14-0, OU's sixth shutout of the season and ninth run-rule of 2021.
Following a three-run first inning and one run each in the third and fourth frames, Oklahoma exploded for nine runs in the top of the fifth on eight hits to bring the game to mercy-rule territory.
Alo and Johns paced the Sooners in the box again, with Alo going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and one home run. Johns finished 3-for-4 with a trio of runs batted in and her second homer on the day and fifth of the season.
Alo moved into sole possession of third in program history for career home runs with her two blasts on the day, bringing her tally to 63 career round-trippers, already hitting nine in OU's 11 games of 2021. The Hawaii native is now just two off second-place Shelby Pendley's 65 career homers.
Senior right-handed pitcher Shannon Saile claimed her third win of the season in the circle, finishing with six strikeouts in four innings of work, allowing one hit and no walks in the shutout performance. Sophomore Olivia Rains entered in the fifth to close for OU, striking out a pair.
Oklahoma returns to the diamond to cap their Arizona road trip Sunday at 10 a.m. CT versus Portland State. The game can be seen via subscription on SoonerSports.tv and heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and the TuneIn app nationwide.
