NORMAN – Past, present and future members of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team completed the first day of competition at the 2021 Winter Cup in Indianapolis, Ind., on Friday evening.
The Sooners completed the day with two gymnasts in the top five of the all-around ranks. 2019 OU alum Yul Moldauer (82.600) took bronze in the all-round, while 2017 alum Allan Bower (81.150) placed fifth. The two look to retain their U.S. Senior Men's National Team spots with the top-five finishes.
2019 alum Genki Suzuki (79.200) took eighth in the all-around, while current OU junior Vitaliy Guimaraes (78.950) finished ninth. Redshirt senior Matt Wenske (76.850) placed 13th and former Sooner Kanji Oyama (53.150) finished 21st.
In addition to completing the night in third place in the all-around, Moldauer took first on parallel bars on day one and third on pommel horse with a 14.300 in both events. Suzuki took home a day one podium finish himself, taking second on high bar with a 13.650.
Day two of competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT on Sunday evening, highlighted by individual event finals. Also competing this weekend as part of the junior competition and the Elite Team Cup is OU 2021 signees Brigham Frentheway, Nikolai Kolesnikov and Cailen Walker. The Elite Team Cup will be Saturday beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT and the junior day two competition will take place with the senior men on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Performances at the 2021 Winter Cup determine the 12 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2021 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, June 4-6.
