OU Flies Past Jayhawks

NORMAN – After a two-week hiatus, the Oklahoma women's tennis team didn't skip a beat as they took out Kansas 6-1 Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The win was good for OU's first over Kansas since 2017.
"We spent a lot of time on the basics over the last two weeks and it really showed today," said OU head coach Audra Cohen. "We were able to execute simple and aggressive tennis in the pressure moments. I'm proud of how much we are improving with each match we play."
The Sooners jumped out in from early as they took the doubles point. Ivana Corley and Carmen Corley struck first, routing KU's Vasiliki Karvouni and Sonia Smagina 6-2 on the top court. On court two, Dana Guzman and Camila Romero defeated Julia Deming and Malkia Ngounoue 6-4 to capture the point for the Sooners.
When play was halted, Kianah Motosono and Marcelina Podlinska were locked in at 5-all with Tiffany Lagarde and Carmen Roxana Manu 5-5 at the No. 3 line.
In singles action, Guzman made quick work of Manu, winning 6-2, 6-3 on court three.
Motosono struck next with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lagarde at the No. 5 spot. Podlinska clinched the win for OU as she put away Karvouni 6-3, 6-3 on court four.
The remaining matches played out. Carmen Corley tallied her third win over a ranked opponent this season as she took out No. 81 Smagina 6-4, 7-6 (6). Corley trailed 5-0 in the second set before making a comeback push to send the set to a tiebreaker, which she won.
Ivana Corley defeated Ngounoue 7-6 (2), 6-4 on court two. Kansas scored its lone point when the Jayhawks' Deming defeated Romero 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5) on court six.
