Softball Takes Doubleheader at Houston

February 21, 2021 | Softball

HOUSTON — The No. 2/3 Oklahoma softball team collected two victories over the Houston Cougars Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.

OU (6-0) took the first game of the doubleheader in run-rule fashion, beating the Cougars 12-4 in six innings behind a trio of home runs from senior Jocelyn Alo, junior Grace Green and sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo

The Sooners faced their first deficit of the season early in the game, falling behind 3-0 after a three-run home run from Houston's Sarah Queen.

Oklahoma bounced back with a five-run second inning that saw Green go yard in her first at-bat of the season after missing OU's opening weekend with an injury. The Sooners put up five more runs in the fifth inning before Donihoo's solo shot in the sixth gave OU the run-rule win.

Alo continued her hot start to the year, launching her fourth homer of the season on a solo shot to right field in the fourth inning. She finished the first game 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs and one home run.

Donihoo doubled her home run total from her freshman season, hitting her second round-tripper of her sophomore campaign. The Mustang, Okla., native made the most of her first start at second base of the year, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 with her one blast in OU's first game.

Freshmen Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings continued to shine, with Coleman going 2-for-4 in the box with two RBIs and Jennings finishing 2-for-5 with three RBIs in game one.

Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez took the win in OU's early game, striking out four in four innings, surrendering UH's four runs on five hits and no walks. Sophomore Macy McAdoo saw 1.1 innings worth of action, striking out two and allowing just one hit before redshirt senior Shannon Saile made her 2021 debut in the sixth, striking out one to finish the game.

Oklahoma won a competitive second game of the day, 5-3. The Cougars took the Sooners the full seven innings in the night cap, OU's first full contest of the 2021 season after beginning the year with five consecutive run-rule victories.

OU jumped out to an early lead with a solo shot off the bat of Alo in the top of the first. Houston responded with a two-run third inning to take the lead, plating its two runs off throwing errors.

Junior Grace Lyons blasted a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning, bringing in Alo and Coleman to put OU back on top, 4-3. Following a solo homer in the bottom of the inning from Houston's Kati Ray Brown, the Sooners added an insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of Green, scoring Lyons on a single through the left side.

Alo and Lyons paced the Sooners in the box in game two with Alo finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI and her second home run of the day and Lyons going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one blast.

With two home runs on the day and five on the season, Alo brought her career home run tally to 59 and extended her consecutive game hit streak to 20, dating back to the 2020 season. Lyons leads OU on the season with seven home runs, already besting her five round trippers in 24 games in 2020.

Freshman Nicole May collected the victory in game two with an exceptional 5.1 innings pitched, eight strikeout performance. May allowed one earned run on three hits. Saile came in to close for the second straight game, going 1.2 innings and striking out four to just one hit.

Oklahoma returns to the field Monday morning in Houston to face off against Tarleton State at Cougar Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed via live stream on UHCougars.com. The game is also available on the radio via The Franchise 2 in Oklahoma (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) and on the TuneIn app with OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank on the call.
