Sooners Run Rule Tarleton State

February 22, 2021 | Softball

HOUSTON — The No. 2/3 Oklahoma softball team finished its weekend in Houston with a run-rule win over Tarleton State, 13-0, Monday afternoon.

The Sooners moved to 7-0 on the season and won their sixth game in run-rule fashion with the five-inning victory over the Texans.

Junior Grace Lyons got the scoring started for OU in the bottom of the first as OU was the designated home team in the game. Lyons ripped an RBI double to center field to plate freshman Jayda Coleman prior to freshman Tiare Jennings knocking a single to bring in Lyons and put the Sooners up 2-0 after one inning.

Following a double from sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo in the second, Lyons brought in two more runs on a single to right center.

Oklahoma put up four more runs in the third inning on three hits. Sophomore Kinzie Hansen began the scoring on a solo shot to left field before Donihoo registered a sac-fly RBI to plate senior Lynnsie Elam, who reached on a single. Sophomore Raylee Pogue entered the game for her second appearance of the season as a pinch runner for junior Grace Green, who laced a double down the left field line. Pogue beat a throw to home on a Grace Lyons fielder's choice to push the lead to 7-0.

Senior Jocelyn Alo registered her own sac-fly RBI to bring home Rylie Boone and make it 8-0 after three.

After a single from junior Kinsey Koeltzow, Green's second double of the game and a walk to Coleman, Alo demolished a pitch for her first grand slam of the season and her sixth home run of the year. Alo's four-run shot brought the score to a final tally of 13-0.

Alo finished the weekend an exceptional 6-for-10 at the plate with two home runs and nine RBIs, including five runs batted in in Oklahoma's final game.

Green, making her first appearances this weekend after an injury kept her out last week, finished 6-for-9 from the plate with two doubles, one home run and three RBIs in the three contests.

The Sooners stole six bases versus the Texans, marking the first time the team has stolen five bags since game two of the 2017 series against Iowa State.

Four pitchers combined on a one-hit game for the Sooners, with redshirt senior Shannon Saile taking the win in the circle. Saile went 2.1 innings, striking out four of the seven batters she faced and allowing no runs or hits. Sophomores Macy McAdoo and Olivia Rains and redshirt senior Giselle Juarez all saw action, with Rains and Juarez striking out three and two, respectively.

Oklahoma returns to action in the Phoenix area Feb. 26-28 for five games. The Sooners will meet New Mexico and Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., Friday and Saturday on the campus of ASU before finishing the weekend at Grand Canyon University against UNM, GCU and Portland State.
