NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team notched its ninth consecutive win over in-state rival Tulsa on Sunday, routing the Golden Hurricane 6-1 at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
"We love playing at home. We've been on the road four of the last five weekends so it was great to get back and play on our home courts again," said OU head coach Nick Crowell.
The Sooners (6-4) gave up just two games total en route to the doubles point. Jake Van Emburgh and Matt Rodriguez shut out Tulsa's Daniel Siddall and Ezequiel Santalla 6-0 at the No. 3 line. Mason Beiler and Max Stewart secured the opening point for OU with a 6-2 win over Boriss Kamdem and Tom Thelwall-Jones on court two.
When play was halted, Nathan Han and Alex Martinez were tied at 3-all with ITA No. 29 Connor Di Marco and Cody Pearson.
"We worked on our doubles so hard the last few weeks," Crowell said. "For us, that was a huge point. Our guys are really buying in to some things and it really paid off tonight. We're just going to try to come back tomorrow and get better."
"Playing with Matt, we have this connection and this energy," said Van Emburgh of the shut out on court three. "We play big and we come forward and play positive. It's hard to stop a train like that."
No. 69 Beiler was the first Sooner off the court in singles. The junior made quick work of Siddall on court three, putting his match away 6-2, 6-0.
Freshman Han picked up his fourth consecutive singles victory as he took out Juan-Pablo Cenoz 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 line.
Van Emburgh sealed the win for the Sooners as he put away No. 67 Pearson 6-2, 6-3 to earn his first ranked victory of the season.
The remaining courts played out. At the No. 6 line, Stewart defeated Siddall 6-3, 6-4. Martinez added another win for OU with a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 1-0 [8] victory over Di Marco.
On court four, Mark Mandlik battled Stefan Hampe to a 10-point tiebreaker, but fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10].
