February 12, 2021 | Softball
EL PASO, Texas — The No. 4 Oklahoma softball team closed opening weekend with two more victories at the Miner Invitational, beating ACU (11-0) and UTEP (21-2) in run-rule fashion.
Following a record-setting day on Thursday, the Sooners went right back to work on Friday, besting the Wildcats and Miners by a combined score of 32-2, blasting eight more home runs on the day. Oklahoma finished the weekend with a total of 70 runs scored and 24 home runs to opponents' 10 hits and two runs.
In Friday's first game versus Abilene Christian, The Sooners breezed by the Wildcats in five innings, knocking four home runs courtesy of two from senior transfer Jana Johns and one a piece from junior Grace Lyons and freshman Tiare Jennings.
Jennings and Johns paced OU in the box. Jennings finished game one a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two doubles and one homer. Johns launched her first two home runs as a Sooner and finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez was exceptional again in the circle, finishing with five strikeouts in three innings of work, allowing no runs or hits and one walk. Sophomores Macy McAdoo and Alanna Thiede pitched an inning a piece in relief, with Thiede allowing just one hit and striking out one to close the game.
Game two featured more of the same from OU in the box, putting up 21 runs on 23 hits and four home runs. It marked the second game of the weekend the Sooners eclipsed 20 runs after scoring 29 on an NCAA-record 13 home runs Thursday versus the Miners.
Sophomore Kinzie Hansen led OU with two home runs in the second game, finishing 3-for-5 with five RBIs. She finished the weekend with four homers, matching her 2020 season total in just four games.
Senior Jocelyn Alo launched a roundtripper for her 57th career home run, moving her into fourth in program history. The Hawaii native finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs and her one homer.
Additionally, junior Grace Lyons went yard once in a 3-for-4, two RBI performance. Alo, Lyons and Hansen teamed up to hit three consecutive home runs in an eight-run fourth inning for OU.
Freshman Nicole May picked up her first career win in the circle, going three innings and striking out three to go with two runs on three hits and one walk. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal and sophomore Olivia Rains combined to close the contest for the Sooners, with Vestal tossing one strikeout.
Lyons and Jennings cap the weekend with six and five home runs, respectively and 12 RBIs each. The freshman, Jennings, finishes her first weekend of collegiate action with an exceptional .923 batting average.
The Sooners return to action Friday, Feb. 19 in Huntsville, Texas, to face off against UTSA and Sam Houston State on the campus of SHSU. OU will make the short trip to Houston on Saturday for a double header with Houston.
