Brkic Named Lou Groza Award Finalist

November 23, 2021 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma kicker Gabe Brkic has been named one of three finalists for the 2021 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Tuesday.

This is the first time Brkic, a three-time Lou Groza semifinalist, has been selected as a finalist for the award that goes to the nation's top placekicker. He is joined as a finalist by Michigan's Jake Moody and Ohio State's Noah Ruggles.

Brkic has made 17 of 23 field goals and all 48 of his PAT attempts in his 11 games this season. He has made 8 of 12 field goal attempts from 40 yards or longer and is 5 for 7 on tries from at least 50 yards. Brkic leads the nation with his five field goals of 50 yards or longer, two which were good from 56 yards.

The Chardon, Ohio, product ranks second nationally with his nine makes from 50-plus yards since the start of the 2020 season. He ranks 14th nationally this season and leads the Big 12 by averaging 1.5 made field goals per game.

Brkic already holds the school record for most career makes of 40 yards or longer (20) and has made 10 career field goals of at least 50 yards. He has connected on four field goals in a game twice this season and four times in his career.

This season, Brkic tied a school record for single-game kick scoring with his 17 points against Texas on Oct. 9. He converted 56-yard field goals in consecutive games against Tulane on Sept. 4 and Western Carolina on Sept. 11. The 56-yarders tied as the third-longest in school history (longest since 1977; 58-yarder by Uwe von Schamann vs. Oklahoma State). He tied an FBS single-game record with his three made field goals of 50-plus yards in the season opener against Tulane.

For his career, Brkic has made 54 of 66 field goals and all 150 of his PAT attempts. He ranks second in program history with his .818 field goal conversion rate and second with his 150 consecutive made PATs, trailing only Austin Seibert's 162 consecutive makes from 2016-18.

The Lou Groza Award finalists were selected by a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists and current NFL kickers. These finalists will be honored at the 30th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Virtual Awards Celebration, streamed live on Dec. 8 on lougrozaaward.com. The same voting panel selects the winner, who will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 9.
