PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (B4A) – Senior guard Taylor Robertson tied a school record with nine 3-pointers to lead Oklahoma to a bounce-back win against Buffalo, 93-72, Sunday in the inaugural Bad Boy Mowers Women's Battle 4 Atlantis.
After nearly pulling off the upset against No. 9 Oregon on Saturday, Robertson made sure there was no hangover for the Sooners as she led all players with 27 points, all of which came from beyond the arc. The McPherson, Kan., product scored 12 points in the first half and 15 in the second to lead Oklahoma in the victory.
Oklahoma moves to 4-1 on the year and Buffalo falls to 1-2. The Sooners will take on Minnesota on Monday in the fifth-place game at the tournament. Tip is slated for 5 p.m. on Flo Hoops.
"What a great team effort, I thought we had some great energy," said Oklahoma head coach Jennie Baranczyk. "I thought Nevaeh Tot and Skylar Vann did some really great things for us today. Just really sparking us in terms of energy. I thought our second quarter was really great. My favorite stat on the whole sheet is the 29 assists, so I love that we're playing together and having fun. I think being able to step on the floor and completely separate one day to the next, shows a lot about the maturity of this team and I was really proud of that."
The first quarter was a battle as neither team led by more than three points with Buffalo owning a 17-15 advantage on the scoreboard. The Bulls pushed their lead to 24-17 in the second, but the Sooners countered with an 11-0 run to pull ahead, 28-24, following back-to-back 3-pointers from Robertson.
Thanks to a 30-point second quarter, Oklahoma never trailed again in the contest and led by as many as 26 points late in the fourth quarter. The Sooners led by at least 10 points throughout the second half, putting together a run each time Buffalo tried to make one.
Oklahoma tallied an assist on 29 of its 36 field goals in the contest, which included 15 3-pointers. After a tough start and scoreless first quarter, Robertson hit four threes in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth quarter to match her career high and school record.
"If I start getting on a roll, I'm always thinking next shot whether the first shot goes in or misses," Robertson added. "And even though it was a slow start by my shooting, I just kept thinking next shot, next shot and eventually it'll go in."
Robertson was one of four Sooners to reach double figures, as Madi Williams scored 19 points with 12 rebounds to secure her 15th career double-double, and Ana Llanusa notched 16 points. Skylar Vann added 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Kelbie Washington led the team with a career-high seven assists.
