Thirty-One Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN — A program-record 31 University of Oklahoma football student-athletes were named to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Thursday. The Sooners were represented by 22 first-team selections and nine second-team honorees.
OU's 22 first-team selections surpassed the previous high of 19 set last year and increased the program's streak of at least seven first-team honorees to 15 years. This is the second straight year in which the Sooners established a program record for all-academic team honors (had 29 last year).
Redshirt senior offensive lineman Marquis Hayes, redshirt senior linebacker Bryan Mead, redshirt freshman kicker Zach Schmit, redshirt senior quarterback Tanner Schafer and redshirt junior wide receiver Devin Staton are five of the league's 11 football student-athletes recognized with a 4.0 GPA. Mead, Schafer and Staton were nominated with a 4.0 GPA for the second straight year. No other school produced more than two selections with a 4.0 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, either cumulatively or over the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 20% of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percentage of participation are also eligible.
First-team members consist of student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
