November 18, 2021 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks was named a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award on Thursday.

Brooks, a Mansfield, Texas, product, has rushed for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns on 145 carries this season. He ranks second in the Big 12 by averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He rushed for 217 yards and two scores on 25 carries (8.7 yards per rush), including the game-winning touchdown, in the Sooners' 55-48 comeback win over Texas on Oct. 9. He followed that performance by running for 153 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries against TCU on Oct. 16.

Over the last five games, Brooks is averaging 107.8 rushing yards and has run for six touchdowns. He ran for over 1,000 yards each of his first two seasons and needs 143 to become just the fourth Sooner to ever record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons. The others were De'Mond Parker (1996-98), Adrian Peterson (2004-06) and Samaje Perine (2014-16). Brooks has rushed for 2,924 yards and 27 touchdowns on 419 carries in 35 career games.

The fan vote for the semifinalists round will begin at 5 p.m. today, and fans can vote for their candidate up to once per day at www.earlcampbellaward.com. The finalists will be announced in December and the winner will be announced at an award banquet in Tyler, Texas, in January 2022.

Named after 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, the award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, winners must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

OU quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018) won the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in back-to-back years. The Sooners have produced eight finalists since 2014: Samaje Perine in 2014, Dede Westbrook in 2016, Mayfield each year from 2015-17, Murray in 2018 and Jalen Hurts and CeeDee Lamb in 2019.
