NORMAN — Oklahoma's true freshman duo of quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Mario Williams was honored by the Big 12 on Monday after leading the Sooners to a 52-21 win over Texas Tech on Saturday. Caleb Williams was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Mario Williams was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Caleb Williams set an Oklahoma true freshman record with 402 passing yards and tied the school freshman record with six touchdown passes (most ever by an OU true freshman) against the Red Raiders. He completed 23 of 30 passes (76.7%) and finished with a 255.2 passing efficiency rating, which was the best nationally for the week and the best in the country this season among quarterbacks who attempted at least 30 passes. The Washington, D.C., product became just the third player in OU history to throw for at least six touchdowns without an interception, joining Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield (2016 vs. Texas Tech) and Kyler Murray (2018 vs. Baylor).
On the season, Caleb Williams, who has started three games, has 14 TD passes against one interception and ranks second nationally with his 203.7 passing efficiency mark.
Mario Williams, a native of Tampa, Fla., caught a team-high five passes for a career-high 100 yards and a touchdown Saturday. His 22-yard first-quarter TD reception accounted for the first points of the game and marked his first touchdown since the second game of the season (was his third of the year). Among Williams' other receptions were ones of 26 and 36 yards. The 36-yarder was a career-long.
This is Caleb Williams' second Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor and his third Big 12 accolade this season. He was named the league's offensive player of the week Oct. 18 after his performance in his first career start vs. TCU and was named newcomer of the week Oct. 11 for his efforts in OU's 55-48 win over Texas. This is Mario Williams' first career Big 12 honor.
Oklahoma (9-0, 6-0 Big 12), which is off this week, will be on the road Nov. 13 at Baylor (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) in Waco, Texas. Kickoff time will be determined after the games on Nov. 6.
