Sooners Conclude Fall Opener in Oklahoma City

October 03, 2021 | Rowing

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma rowing completed its first race weekend of the year at the Head of the Oklahoma on the Oklahoma River Sunday morning.

"I think we learned a lot and that's the important thing early in the season," said Oklahoma head rowing coach Leeanne Crain. "If we stay committed to our training plan and bring the same level of race intensity to our daily practice routine, we should continue to gain speed."

The Sooners started competition with the women's collegiate eight Saturday with OU's A boat recording a fifth-place finish in 14:03.62. Oklahoma's B boat tallied a time of 15:06.52 for eighth.

The Sooners' A boat secured a second-place finish (1:36.48) in the 500-meter night sprints.

OU entered five boats into the women's collegiate four races with a pair of boats finishing inside the top 10. The Sooners' A boat led the way with a sixth-place finish in 15:41.86, while the B boat tallied a time of 16:01.52 for eighth. The final two entries, the C and D boats, finished 17th and 20th, respectively.

"We've spent only a few days in small boats and our singles raced well today so that was nice to see," said Crain.

On Sunday morning, Oklahoma competed in both the women's open two race and the women's collegiate singles.

The pair of Kyleigh Arthur and Cameron Guild recorded a 15th-place finish in 17:58.80, while the duo of Allison Duff and Sadie Pilz finished 16th in 18:00.19.

In the singles competition, a trio finished inside the top five, and were led by Emma Wistuba's third-place finish (17:25.21). Andjela Nisevic recorded a fourth-place finish (18:05.70) while Breah McKay was fifth (18:14.08).
