Williams Named to Cheryl Miller Award Watch List

October 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that Oklahoma senior forward Madi Williams is one of 20 players named to its watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award for the first time in her career.

Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its fifth year recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

"The student-athletes named to the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year watch list have worked tremendously hard and should be proud of all they have achieved," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "Cheryl has long been recognized as one of the greatest athletes to ever play our game after an absolutely dominant career at USC and winning a pair of NCAA Championships. We are very much looking forward to working with her alongside our own selection committee in evaluating talent throughout the 2021-22 season."

The Fort Worth, Texas, product enters the 2021-22 season as a unanimous All-Big 12 preseason selection after averaging 20.0 points per game as a junior, good for third in the Big 12. Williams became the 38th Sooner to join the 1,000-point club last season when she hit the mark on the road at Baylor.

The senior has amassed 14 double-doubles throughout her career in Norman and set Oklahoma's single-game points record last season when she scored 45 vs. West Virginia on Jan. 3. Williams gets the job done on both ends of the floor, leading the Sooners in points, rebounds, steals and blocks per game last season.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. Voting will go live on Friday, Oct. 29.

In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. Five finalists will then be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee in late February.

The 2022 Cheryl Miller Award winner will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.

Williams joins teammate Taylor Robertson on the Starting Five Watch List's, as Robertson was named to the list for the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Shooting Guard Award on Tuesday.

Previous winners of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award include Ashley Joens, Iowa State (2021), Satou Sabally, Oregon (2020), Bridget Carleton, Iowa State (2019) and Gabby Williams, Connecticut (2018).

Williams and the Sooners tip off the season on Nov. 9 at South Dakota before opening its home slate Nov. 12 vs. Arkansas State.
