SAN MARCOS, Texas –
Mikhaela Fortuna led Oklahoma women's golf at the Jim West Challenge and secured her first career top-5 finish while the Sooners finished eighth Tuesday at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
Fortuna fired off rounds of 71-69-67 (-9, 207) to finish tied for fourth and eclipsed her previous-best seventh place finish, which she had accomplished three times. She has 13 career rounds in the 60s and her final round 67 was a season low.
The senior tied for the fourth-lowest score (-7) on par 5s and the fifth lowest (-3) on par 4s.
In the final round, Fortuna tallied her first eagle of the 2021-22 fall slate on the par-5, 493-yard 3rd hole, and finished 4-under 32 on the front nine to conclude the tournament.
"Mikhaela had a great event this week and I am really proud of her performance," said
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "She put in a lot of time and effort, and it was great to see it come together."
Hannah Screen secured the second-best round of the day for the Sooners (74), while finishing second overall in the OU lineup with a 1-over 217. She tied for 29th and netted a pair of birdies in her final seven holes.
Maria Fernanda Martinez opened the Jim West Challenge with back-to-back rounds of 73 and concluded her first tournament back in the lineup with a 76. The junior tallied a 6-over 222 throughout the two-day event.
Nina Lang (+8, 224) and
Meagan Winans (+14, 230) rounded out the OU contingent.
