Sooners Top Red Raiders in Five-Set Battle

NORMAN – Peyton Dunn set a career high with 54 assists and recorded her seventh double-double of the season as the Oklahoma volleyball team topped Texas Tech, 3-2, Thursday night inside McCasland Field House.
Behind Dunn pacing the offense, the Sooners (9-9, 3-4 Big 12) took down Tech (12-8, 2-5 Big 12) 30-28, 20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-13. Dunn's 54 assists surpassed her previous high of 50 set against Houston on Aug. 29. Along with her 54 assists, Dunn chopped in 11 digs.
"We'll take the win and go," head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "We played really well tonight, too. Credit to Texas Tech, they responded in some of the sets, but overall, we played really really well. The big thing this week was to have a better defensive effort and that definitely showed up tonight. Career highs for digs for a couple of people, blocks for the team in solos. So it's just really nice to see the team respond to what we knew needed to be there tonight."
Callie Kemohah also set a career-high with 35 digs on the night. Sam Anthony added a career-high 19 while Olivia LittleJim had 13 and Aysia Harty tallied 11.
The Sooners tallied 15 blocks on the night, 10 of which were solo blocks to set a new program record for solo blocks in a five-set match. Savannah Davison had four solo blocks on the night to lead the team while Paige Anderson had six total to lead the Sooners.
Davison also led the offensive attack with a career-high 27 kills. Megan Wilson chipped in 16, while Anderson added 11 on a .440 clip.
OU took a wild first set, 30-28. Tech held a 15-11 advantage at the first timeout, but the Sooners came out of the break firing, pulling within one at 15-14 before an Anderson kill tied the match at 16-all. A kill from Davison got the Sooners back within one at 19-18 and a Tech error made the match square again at 21-all. Wilson gave OU a late lead with her fourth kill of the set, but the Red Raiders fired back to take a 23-22 lead. With set point on the line for Tech, Davison picked up back-to-back kills to give OU the 25-24 lead and set point. The teams would trade six set points before Wilson clinched the set with a kill.
Texas Tech took an early 8-3 lead in set two, forcing the Sooners to call timeout. The Red Raiders continued to dominate the set, tying the match at 1-all with a 25-20 win.
OU took set three, 25-16. The Sooners had the early advantage as they forced Tech into calling timeout at 13-9. Out of the break, Tech scored two quick points but Wilson's 11th kill of the match put the Sooners back in command. OU continued to hold off Tech's attempts to pull even as Davison picked up a block to put the Sooners up 19-14. The Sooners finished the set on a 6-2 run to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Tech took an 11-7 lead early in the fourth set as the Sooners called timeout. OU pulled within one point, but a Tech run made it 17-12 in favor of the Red Raiders. Tech would ultimately take the set, 25-18, to force a fifth and final set.
In the fifth set, Tech took a quick 5-2 lead before the Sooners went on a 6-1 run to take an 8-6 lead. Tech pulled even at 12-12, but the Sooners closed out the match with a kill from Davison to take the set, 15-13.
OU and Texas Tech will meet again Friday at 6 p.m. CT. The match will be the annual Pink match along with Alumni Night in honor of homecoming weekend.
