NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team toppled the No. 8 Army Black Knights on Saturday afternoon in OU's first virtual competition in program history. The Sooners beat Army by a score of 413.400-375.100 as OU competed inside historic McCasland Field House and Army performed their routines in West Point, N.Y.

"I think this was kind of an historic event," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "I'm happy that we've continued to be able to compete. It did feel odd but we got to watch what Army did on the big screen. We did get evaluated by nationally-certified judges and made it a team event. I felt like we had a decent day under these circumstances.

"I think our guys did the job that they're supposed to do, I also think we have some stars on our team that gave us some highlights." - Mark Williams

Oklahoma won every team and individual event title of the meet and junior Vitaliy Guimaraes brought home the all-around crown with an 82.900 tally.

The Sooners rotated Olympic order on the day, starting on floor exercise with a team total of 71.300. The first of two 70-plus events in the meet for OU. Senior captain Gage Dyer continued his hot start to the season on floor, winning the title with a 14.950. The tally is a season best for Dyer and the highest score in the NCAA this season across any apparatus. Additionally, Guimaraes and junior Morgan Seyler registered season bests, each with sets of of 14.450.

In the second rotation on pommel horse, OU freshman Zach Nunez continued to show his skill on one of the hardest events. Nunez tallied a career-best 14.000 that lead the Sooners and won the event. Guimaraes and sophomore David Sandro also put up career highs with respective routines of 13.900 and 13.500. Oklahoma scored a 67.850 as a team on pommel horse, good for a season best.

Moving to still rings for the third rotation, OU tallied a 67.100, lead by Guimaraes' 13.800 set that won him his first event crown of the meet. The score tied the junior's career high while fellow junior Spencer Goodell also tied his career best with a 13.750.

Oklahoma showed its power yet again on vault in the fourth rotation, putting up its second 70-plus score on the night with a 72.350. Dyer anchored the rotation with a massive 14.750, performing one of the hardest vaults in the country, a triple-twisting full. The tally won Dyer's second event title of the meet. Redshirt junior Mason Menser tied his career best in the rotation with a 14.650 vault. Wenske chipped in a 14.700.

"That was a huge parallel bars score by Matt Wenske," continued Williams. "It's been said that Gage (Dyer) is world-class on floor and he proved that yet again tonight. To me that's stardom. He did a triple-full on vault, there's not many of those in the world and he did it pretty well.

"Then, we had two guys in Vitaliy (Guimaraes) and Spencer (Goodell) that look like they'll qualify for the all-around at Winter Cup. We're doing what we're supposed to do."

OU moved to parallel bars in the fifth rotation and registered a solid 68.050 team score. Wenske lead the Sooners with a 14.200 stuck routine that was good for a season best and event title for the senior captain. Recording a career high in the rotation was sophomore Alan Camillus, putting up a 13.700 in the leadoff spot.

In the sixth and final rotation on high bar, the Sooners scored a team total of 66.750. Guimaraes paced OU with an event-winning 13.750. Senior Alexei Vernyi put up a second-place 13.450. Sophomores Jack Freeman and Sandro chipped in respective routines of 13.400 and 13.250.

Guimaraes won the all-around crown over Goodell with a 82.900 to Goodell's 81.200.

"Unfortunately our schedule is what it is and we don't have a meet in February. Hopefully we'll be back even better when we get started in March," concluded Williams.

The Sooners will take a break from NCAA competition for the month of February and return to competition March 6 for a scheduled visit to Williamsburg, Va., for a meet with William & Mary College.

Select OU gymnasts will take part in the USA Gymnastics meet, Winter Cup, held this year in Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 26-28. The meet showcases the top U.S. gymnasts in the country as they compete for national team spots.
