Super Six Sink Jayhawks

January 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma "super six" avenged their Dec. 10 loss at Kansas as OU held on for an 84-81 win over the Jayhawks Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

Oklahoma improves to 5-7 on the season and 2-5 against the conference while Kansas moves to 6-6 and 2-4 in league play.

"Really, really proud of the unity that our team displayed," said OU head coach Sherri Coale. "I'm proud of the way they competed, the way they played together and shared the ball … We shot the ball really well tonight."

The Sooners had their best shooting game against a Big 12 opponent as they fired .538 (28-for-52) from the floor. OU impressed from beyond the arc where it went 15-for-31 (.414) to match a season-high in made 3-point field goals.

Taylor Robertson and Gabby Gregory combined for 11 of OU's 15 treys on the night as Gregory sank a career-high six and Robertson nailed five of her own. Wednesday's game marked the 50th consecutive game in which Robertson has made at least one 3-pointer. Her streak dates back to her freshman season in February 2019.

Gregory finished with a game-high 27 points, good for the second-most of her career and her third performance with 20 points or more this season. The sophomore stuffed the stat sheet as she grabbed four rebounds and five assists.

All six Sooners put up points and three more players chipped in points in double figures: Robertson had 19; Madi Williams tallied 14 to go with six rebounds; and freshman Nevaeh Tot scored 11 to go with seven assists and two steals.

Tatum Veitenheimer finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists. The sophomore matched her career high in made 3-pointers as she drained three. Skylar Vann scored four points and pulled down four boards off the bench.

The Sooners came out firing in the first half, shooting 17-for-29 from the floor and 9-for-17 from 3. OU took a 49-38 lead into the locker room at the half as Gregory led the way with 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Williams was right behind with 12 points.

OU led by as many as 15 into the third quarter as the Sooners continued to rain down 3-pointers. Kansas used a late 10-0 surge to close the gap to five points with just 23 seconds to play, but the Sooners would only let Kansas score once more before time ran out.
