Five Former Sooners in MLB Postseason

NORMAN — Five former University of Oklahoma baseball players will take part in the Major League Baseball postseason, which begins Tuesday afternoon with the wild card round of games.

Jack Mayfield, who played at OU from 2010-13 is with the Houston Astros, Garrett Richards (at OU from 2007-09) is with the San Diego Padres and Chase Anderson (at OU from 2008-09) is with the Toronto Blue Jays. Two former Sooners will serve as coaches for postseason clubs: Nick Capra (played at OU in 1979) is third base coach for the Chicago White Sox and Reggie Willits (played 2002-03 at OU) is first base coach for the New York Yankees.

In 21 appearances this season, Mayfield scored five runs, drove in three runs and doubled once. He drove in two runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 25 and went 2 for 3 against the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 29. He doubled and scored two runs in a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels Sept. 5-6 and drove in a run against the Texas Rangers on Sept. 26.

In his 10th Major League season, Richards went 2-2 with a 4.03 ERA, making 14 appearances and 10 starts. He struck out 46 batters and allowed 23 runs in 51.1 innings pitched, turning in three quality starts. His last four appearances have come out of the bullpen, where he has pitched five innings and allowed no runs in his last four innings.

Anderson, in his seventh MLB season and first in Toronto, pitched in 10 games with seven starts and posted a 1-2 record and 7.22 ERA. He struck out 38 batters in 33.2 innings. His last three appearances have been in relief, including 2.0 shutout innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 26.

The Astros, A's, White Sox, Blue Jays and Yankees all begin their three-game wild card series Tuesday, while the Padres open the postseason on Wednesday. Houston plays at Minnesota at 1 p.m. CT, Oakland hosts the Chicago White Sox at 2 p.m. CT, Toronto plays at Tampa Bay starting at 4 p.m. CT and the New York Yankees are at Cleveland with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Tuesday. San Diego hosts the Cardinals starting at 4 p.m. CT Wednesday.
