NORMAN — Five former University of Oklahoma baseball players are on Major League baseball rosters, as MLB opens the 2020 season this weekend.
Jon Gray, who played at OU from 2012-13, is with the Colorado Rockies, Jack Mayfield (at OU from 2010-13) is with the Houston Astros, Garrett Richards (at OU from 2007-09) is with the San Diego Padres and Burch Smith (at OU in 2011) is with the Oakland Athletics. Chase Anderson (at OU from 2008-09), with the Toronto Blue Jays, will begin the season on the 10-day injured list.
In addition, three former Sooners serve as coaches for Major League franchises. Nick Capra (played at OU in 1979) is third base coach for the Chicago White Sox, Tim Cossins (played at OU from 1992-93) is field coordinator for the Baltimore Orioles and Reggie Willits (played 2002-03 at OU), is first base coach for the New York Yankees.
