NORMAN — A league-high six Oklahoma Sooners received Big 12 preseason honors and five were named to the 2020 Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team that was announced Thursday by the conference and chosen by media representatives who cover the league.
Junior wide receiver Charleston Rambo, junior offensive linemen Creed Humphrey and Adrian Ealy, junior defensive end Ronnie Perkins and sophomore placekicker Gabe Brkic were among the 29 players to earn preseason all-conference recognition by position. Redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler was selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Oklahoma's six overall player selections are the most in the league while OU and Texas tied for the most selections on the preseason team with five. OU's four offensive players are also more than any other school (Oklahoma State has three).
The 2020 preseason Big 12 media poll will be released Friday.
OU's leading returning wide receiver, Rambo ranked second on the Sooners in 2019 with 43 receptions, 743 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. He notched three games with more than 100 receiving yards, including a two-catch, 122-yard effort against Texas Tech. He scored two long touchdowns (48 and 39 yards) while recording five catches for 166 yards at UCLA and reeled in three passes for 105 yards and a score in the season opener against Houston.
The 2019 Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, Humphrey was also a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, a second-team All-American and a first-team All-Big 12 selection last season. He has made 25 starts over the last two years, including in all 14 games in 2019. Humphrey, who anchored the middle of OU's O-line unit that won the Joe Moore Award in 2018 and was a semifinalist in 2019, was credited with 93 knockdowns and allowed no sacks last year.
A second-team All-Big 12 selection, Ealy started at right tackle in all 12 contests in which he played in 2019, his first season as a starter for the Sooners. He was a member of the O-line unit that was named a Joe Moore Award semifinalist for the second straight year and helped pave the way for an offensive attack that led the Big 12 in yards per game (537.6), yards per pass attempt (11.7), yards per play (nation-high 7.96) and yards per rush (5.95).
A second-team All-Big 12 selection, Brkic was the only placekicker nationally who made all of his field goal and extra point tries in 2019 (69 for 69 combined). Also a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, Brkic took over kicking duties prior to the Sooners' fourth game of the season and went 17 for 17 on field goal attempts and 52 for 52 on PATs, earning freshman All-America honors from the FWAA and The Athletic, and first-team All-America honors from CBS Sports. He is a 2020 preseason All-American by Sporting News.
A second-team All-Big 12 selection last season, Perkins ranked second on the team with 13.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks (tied for fifth in the Big 12) and six QB hurries. He registered 3.0 sacks and 4.0 TFLs in OU's win at Baylor, the most sacks in one game by a Sooner since 2015. Perkins, who has made 20 career starts, recorded at least one TFL in nine games in 2019.
Rattler saw action in three games in 2019, completing 7 of 11 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown while running three times for 23 yards (7.7 average). The former five-star recruit completed all four pass attempts for 50 yards and his first career touchdown in his collegiate debut against South Dakota. He also went 2 for 4 through the air for 23 yards against Texas Tech and completed 1 of 3 attempts for eight yards against LSU in the CFP Semifinal at the Peach Bowl.
