PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — The No. 3 Oklahoma softball team (2-0) continued its opening weekend at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Friday afternoon with a 10-3 victory over Long Beach State (1-1).
The bats came alive for the Sooners in the second game of the season. Jocelyn Alo hit OU's first home run of the year in the top of the second inning to drive in three runs, while freshman Kinzie Hansen continued her hot start with a 3-for-4, three-RBI showing at the plate.
Freshman Macy McAdoo earned the win in the circle for OU, going 2.2 innings and registering a strikeout. Senior Shannon Saile got the save, entering in the bottom of the sixth and leaving the bases loaded with two strikeouts in the frame.
OU got on top early courtesy of Hansen. In the top of the first following a Rylie Boone walk and Jocelyn Alo hit by pitch, Hansen lined a two-run double down the third-base line to score a pair. In the bottom of the first, third baseman Eliyah Flores ended the inning for OU with an impressive double play to leave two stranded.
The Sooners continued to roll in the second inning. After freshman Alycia Flores registered her first career hit and steal, Alo came to the plate and launched her 47th career homer, a three-run shot to center to put the Sooners up 5-0. Freshman Mackenzie Donihoo, sophomore Grace Lyons and junior Lynnsie Elam teamed up to notch OU's second double play of the game in the bottom of the inning and leave LBSU scoreless.
Oklahoma closed the game in the top of the seventh with four runs on five hits. Following a Lyons double down the left field line and an Eliyah Flores' hit by pitch, Alycia Flores registered her second hit of the game to load the bases for the Sooners. Sophomore Kinsey Koeltzow came in to pinch hit and blooped a single to shallow left to score Lyons, while Boone followed Koeltzow with a two-run single. Alo reached on a fielder's choice to score Eliyah Flores and conclude the scoring for Oklahoma on the day.
Action resumes for OU on Saturday with two games. The Sooners face George Washington at 6 p.m. CT before a quick turnaround to finish the weekend against BYU at 8:30 p.m.
