No. 2 Sooners Bounce Back, Top No. 4 Arizona

February 15, 2020 | Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. — No. 2/3 Oklahoma (7-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season on Saturday to post a key road win at the Hillenbrand Invitational. After falling for the first time on the year to Long Beach State (4-4) by a 5-4 score, the Sooners responded to beat No. 4/4 Arizona (8-1) by a 6-4 count in 10 innings on the Wildcats' home field.

Leading 4-1 after 6 1/2 innings in Saturday's first game, the Sooners gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to allow LBSU to claim the comeback victory. Sophomore Grace Lyons gave OU a 3-1 fifth-inning lead by hitting a three-run home run, her second round-tripper in as many games. Junior Eliyah Flores drove in OU's fourth run in the top of the seventh with a double to left center before Long Beach State scored four runs (three unearned), with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

In OU's win over the Wildcats, junior Taylon Snow led the Sooners at the plate with a 2-for-5, two-RBI showing that included a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh inning that plated pinch runner Kinsey Koeltzow to tie the game at 4. In the 10th inning, with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Snow singled to shortstop to advance freshman Mackenzie Donihoo to third. Later in the inning, sophomore Grace Green popped a ball to shallow left field that was dropped. Donihoo and Snow scored on the play for the game's final runs.

Lynnsie Elam also did her part for the Sooners, hitting her team-leading fourth home run in the top of the sixth with a solo shot to center.

Freshman Olivia Rains notched the first win of her career, giving up just one hit and a walk while striking out two in 4.2 innings of relief work. Senior Shannon Saile came in to register her fourth save of the season, retiring the final two UA batters to clinch the top-five victory for OU.

Oklahoma returns to action Sunday at 11 a.m. CT to close the Hillenbrand Invitational with a rematch against Northern Iowa (4-6). The Sooners topped the Panthers 10-2 in rule-rule fashion on Friday.
