ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team fell for just the second time this season on Saturday at the hands of the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines, 416.500-408.900, in a matchup of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the country.
"We hung in there for a while," OU head coach
Mark Williams said. "Being in a home environment for Michigan, they had a great competition. They were clearly better than we were. Some places that we just didn't do as well as I hoped. For the most part, it wasn't a bad performance. We stayed right in our season average. For us to be able to compete down the road we've got to get better."
Oklahoma registered a season-high score on parallel bars with a 68.400. The meet was highlighted by
Vitaliy Guimaraes posting top marks on vault with a 14.700 and floor with a 14.550.
OU opened the meet on pommel horse, tallying a 65.100. Freshman
David Sandro led the team with a career-best 13.550. Redshirt freshman
Braden Collier chipped in a 13.350 with redshirt senior
Grant Kell adding a 13.250.
The Sooners made up some ground on Michigan in the second rotation with a 71.150 on floor. Guimaraes posted a co-meet-high 14.550 while junior
Gage Dyer notched a 14.500. Dyer's score was good for third-best at the meet. Redshirt junior
Matt Wenske notched a season-best 13.950 in the rotation for the Sooners.
OU took the lead in the third rotation, scoring a 71.600 on vault. Guimaraes posted the high score of the meet with a 14.700 as the Sooners counted five scores of 14.050 or better. Wenske's season-best 14.600 was tied for the third-highest score of the meet.
In the fourth rotation, a pair of Sooners registered career highs on rings as the team posted a 67.000. Wenske led the way with a career-best 14.200, good for second among all athletes while sophomore
Spencer Goodell also set a career high with a 13.700 to place fourth overall. Freshman
Alan Camillus posted a 13.100 in his first meet as a Sooner.
Michigan would pull away in the fifth rotation as OU tallied a 65.650 on the high bar. Redshirt junior
Randy Scharnhorst posted a career-best 13.950, good for second overall. Dyer chipped in a 13.450 for the second best score on the team.
OU ended the meet on the parallel bars with a 68.400 as the Sooners counted five scores of 13.250 or better. Dyer and Sandro each tallied a career-best 14.150 on the event while junior
Alexei Vernyi added a career-high 13.600 and Camillus notched a career high with a 13.250.
Wenske was the lone Sooner competing all-around, finishing third with a mark of 80.500.
UP NEXT
Oklahoma will break from NCAA competiton to compete at the annual Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., next weekend. Four current Sooners will compete individually at the USA Gymnastics meet: Dyer, Freeman, Vernyi and Wenske. OU returns to McCasland Field House to take on Air Force on Saturday, March 14.
