Sooners to Meet Florida in Cotton Bowl on Dec. 30

NORMAN — Oklahoma, winner of its last seven games and Big 12 Conference champion for the sixth straight year, will face Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The contest, which will mark OU's sixth consecutive New Year's Six bowl game, will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and be televised by ESPN.
The Sooners, who are not playing in the College Football Playoff for the first time in Lincoln Riley's four-year head coaching career, finished sixth in the CFP rankings while Florida finished seventh.
OU is 8-2 overall, went 6-2 in the Big 12 regular season and is one of four teams nationally (one of two Power Five squads) that ranks in the top 20 in both total offense and total defense. It is 18th in total offense (475.8 ypg) and 20th in total defense (333.6 ypg).
A member of the SEC's East Division, Florida is 8-3 overall (the losses were by a combined 12 points) and finished 8-2 in SEC regular season play. The Gators lost 52-46 to No. 1 Alabama in yesterday's SEC Championship. Its other defeats came at Texas A&M (41-38 on Oct. 10) and at home to LSU (37-34 on Dec. 12). The Gators rank 10th in total offense (508.8 ypg) and 62nd in total defense (404.7 ypg).
Oklahoma and Florida have met once. The top-ranked Gators posted a 24-14 win over the No. 2 Sooners in the BCS National Championship on Jan. 8, 2009, in Miami.
This marks OU's third Cotton Bowl appearance. The Sooners beat Arkansas 10-3 on Jan. 1, 2001, at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas and lost 41-13 to Texas A&M on Jan. 4, 2013, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Bob Stoops served as the Sooners' head coach for both contests.
OU is making its 54th bowl appearance, tied for fourth most nationally. Thirty-nine of those 54 have come in bowls that comprise the current New Year's Six (Orange [20], Sugar [8], Fiesta [5], Cotton [3], Rose [2] and Peach [1]). The 39 does not include OU's BCS National Championship appearance against Florida.
The Sooners are making their 22nd straight bowl appearance. It is by far the longest streak in school history (the previous record was eight in a row from the 1975-82 seasons under Barry Switzer), the longest ever by a current Big 12 program and the second-longest active streak nationally (Georgia; 24).
Oklahoma, which owns a 29-23-1 all-time bowl record, is 5-2 all-time at AT&T Stadium and has won its last four games there (each of the last four Big 12 Championships). The Sooners are coming off a 27-21 win over No. 6/8/8 Iowa State in yesterday's league title game. They have won 14 Big 12 titles in the 25-year history of the conference.
