29 Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

Academic All-Big 12 Teams Big 12 Championship Central Trailer Digital Game Program

NORMAN — A program-record 29 University of Oklahoma football student-athletes were named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Friday. The Sooners were represented by 19 first-team selections and 10 second-team honorees.

OU's 19 first-team selections shattered the previous high of 12 in 2016 and 2018 and increased its streak of at least seven first-team honorees to 14 years. Redshirt senior linebacker Bryan Mead, redshirt senior quarterback Tanner Schafer and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Devin Staton are three of the league's 13 football student-athletes recognized with a 4.00 GPA. Staton was nominated with a 4.00 GPA for the second straight year.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulatively or over the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

First-team members consist of student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
