Sooners Wrap Up Fall Practice

NORMAN — The Oklahoma baseball team concluded fall practice this week with the finale of the Boomer Sooner World Series, a competitive three-game intrasquad series played at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Split into two teams, Boomer and Sooner, OU took advantage of the opportunity to hold competitive contests during the fall in lieu of exhibition games against other schools. Team Boomer won the first scrimmage on Friday, 9-6, and claimed the finale game 7-4 on Wednesday. The squad tied 2-2 on Sunday.
"The blessing of it, for the whole fall, was us getting to practice as a team," OU fourth-year head coach Skip Johnson said. "It got really competitive at the end of the fall, which was really good to see. We have a lot of pieces to the puzzle, now we have to figure out how to put the puzzle together as we go into individual work until Christmas break and the spring."
The intrasquad scrimmages were streamed online for the first time and archived video of those games is available on SoonerSports.tv. Johnson was pleased with the competition of the fall world series.
"We wanted to see their reaction in an environment more dictated like a game situation, with uniforms, separate dugouts, music, bringing guys out of the bullpen and all the little things (that go into a game)," the head coach said. "I think that made it feel more like a game, to see what they can do. I thought it was really good from the competitive side of it. We got to see some guys put in certain pressure situations and how they respond to it."
The Sooners return 24 players from the 2020 team and welcomed 18 newcomers to the roster for 2021. Included among the returners are 11 position players that saw action in eight of the 18 games last spring and 11 pitchers that made at least three appearances last season. The newcomer group features eight transfers and 10 freshmen. Of the 23 pitchers on the roster, 16 are in their first or second season at OU, while 12 of the 20 who play a defensive position have been on the roster fewer than two years.
Johnson noted the individual work between now and spring practice will make a difference for the young pitching staff, particularly in repeating delivery to the plate.
"We'll really start working on making sure they understand how to repeat their delivery and understand more of the nuances of pitching: their skillset of knowing how to get to the next pitch, knowing how important one pitch is and being in control of themselves one pitch at a time," Johnson said. "That's what we'll work on as we go through the next phase of fall practice."
