Sooners Cap Season in Lawrence

November 15, 2020 | Soccer

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Oklahoma soccer team closed its 2020 fall season in Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 loss at the hands of No. 15 Kansas.

The Jayhawks (5-3-1) used a flurry of early goals to control the match, with three of their four goals coming in the first 15 minutes. The Sooners responded in the second half, registering eight shots to KU's six in the second 45. Junior Cameron Tharp highlighted the match for OU with her first career goal coming in the 81st minute off a left-footed strike in the box off a rebound.

"We weren't getting pressure on the ball in the first 15 minutes and that's where the game was over," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "We can't come out and play that passively. We were a completely different team in the second half. It's really nice for our team, goals have been hard to come by this year, so to see Cam score, I was so happy for her. She's improved and gotten better and for her to find a way to score felt good for our team."

OU held the advantage in the match in corner kicks with seven to KU's four, while KU finished with 14 shots to the Sooners' nine.

Seven Sooners took shots in the contest, with junior Lauren Tovy and freshman Sydney Sharts attempting two a piece while CeCe Cross, Abby Mitchell, Jenna Sheely, Cameron Tharp and Yuuka Kurosaki all getting one look. It marked the first career shots for the freshman Sharts and sophomore Sheely.

Sophomore Leah Radow made her first career start in goal for the Sooners, making two saves.

The Sooners close the season 0-8-1 with six of their losses coming by just one goal.

QUOTABLE: CARR RECAPS SEASON

"Ultimately, its a feeling of gratitude to everyone who has made this season possible. I want to thank the Big 12 conference, our OU administration, our incredible medical team, support staff and our student athletes.

Overall, it has been a learning experience on so many levels. I have learned a lot, learned a lot about our conference and the teams within it. This is one of the best and most competitive conferences in the country, hands down. Additionally, I've been able to do a deep evaluation on our team and our players as we have gone through this process together.

In terms of results, we are not where we want to be and there are clearly some gaps which we will need to address. We are close, have improved and I think you can see that in our results.

Looking forward, I just feel very optimistic. We have a solid core group and I believe with the work we have done this fall and the areas we need to address, I have no doubt you will see a much improved product when we return. It wont be easy, It will require a lot of intentional work, a lot of hours and the right mentality to improve ourselves individually and collectively."
